WACO, Texas – Baylor equestrian has been ranked as the preseason No. 7 team in the country by the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA), as announced Tuesday afternoon.

Following a trip to the NCEA quarterfinals as the No. 6 overall seed, the Bears return 17 of their 19 point-winners from the 2021-22 season, including four All-Americans in Shelby Clausen (Reining), Marley Mainwaring (Horsemanship), Jenna Meimerstorf (Reining) and NCEA Co-Rider of the Year Andie Pratt (Reining). Additionally, sixth-year head coach Casie Maxwell welcomes 20 freshmen into the fold for the 2022-23 campaign.

Baylor went 7-8 last season and earned a third-place finish at the 2022 Big 12 Championship after defeating Fresno State in the consolation meet. BU picked up 10 total Rider of the Month awards, including five national recognitions and five conference honors.

Assistant coach Grace Bridges returns for her second year in charge of the Jumping Seat side, while fellow assistant Jessie Weisinger joins the Bears for her first season leading the Horsemanship squad. Maxwell continues to oversee the Reining team and has guided BU to the postseason in all four of her eligible postseasons, after the 2019-20 postseason was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Baylor officially opens the regular season on Thursday, Sept. 29, at No. 10 South Carolina before traveling to face No. 5 Georgia the following day. BU will compete against seven of the other preseason top-10 teams, with 11 of its 13 regular-season meets coming against ranked opponents. The Bears open their home slate on Friday, Oct. 21, against No. 3 TCU, and fans are encouraged to wear gold as part of Baylor’s “Go Gold” campaign.
