Story lines

  * Baylor is finishing out its non-conference slate this weekend as they travel to SMU to play on Sunday, Sept. 18.
  * The Bears and Mustangs have met 12 times previously, with SMU holding the all-time record over BU, 7-5. The first meeting between these two teams was Oct. 2, 1997 and the latest meeting was on Aug. 29, 2021.
  * In the last meeting between these two teams, Baylor took the win in Waco, Texas, after a golden goal from Haven Terry in the 99th minute, secured the Bears 2-1 victory over the Mustangs.
  * The upcoming match against ranked SMU marks the second game of the season against a ranked opponent for the Bears. BU previously faced off against the then No. 1 team in the nation, UNC.
  * The Bears last win against a ranked opponent was on Sept. 26, 2021 when the Bears defeated No. 8 TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.
  * BU played its 7th game of the season last week, as the Bears hit the West Coast to take on San Francisco. Baylor fell to the Dons in that match, 3-1, after freshman Hannah Augustyn scored the first goal of her career in the 14th minute.
  * Baylor was set to play the 8th game of the season against Gonzaga on Sunday, Sept. 11, but the game was canceled due to poor air quality. Due to forest fires in the surrounding Spokane, Wash. area, the smoke from the fires lead to the poor air quality.
  * With the cancelation on Sunday, BU has now had four of eight matches so far this season disrupted by weather. Two have been delayed due to lightning and rain, one has been moved up to do incoming weather and the last canceled due to weather concerns.
  * Freshman, Hallie Augustyn earned the Bears first Big 12 weekly award, as she was tabbed the conference’s Freshman of the Week for her work against Houston and Iowa on Sept. 6, 2021.
  * BU has had 24 different players see playing time this season, with 11 of them being newcomers to the team.
  * Of Baylor’s 15 newcomers, 11 of them played in the first four games of the season for the Bears: Skye Leach, Hallie Augustyn, Hannah Augustyn, Micah Beasley, Trinity Egerton, Kylie Finney, Annika Fredell, Madison Martin, Ashley Merrill, Blythe Obar and Jenna Patterson.
  * Ashley Merrill’s two goals and 15 shots, 10 on goal, lead the Bears.
  * Goalkeeper Lauren Traywick has started in six of the Bears seven games this season, tallying a career-high nine saves against No. 1 North Carolina and recorded six at San Francisco last week.
  * For Gabby Mueller’s game winning goal against the Gators, she was named Top Drawer Soccer’s National Team of the Week Honorable Mention.
  * Kayley Ables was the lone Baylor player named to the Preseason All-Big 12 team. A fifth-year senior for the program, she has been a key component to the Baylor backline, aka the “No-Goal Patrol.”
  * Taylor Moon was named a preseason Forward to Watch this season by United Soccer Coaches.
  * With coach Lenard’s new playing philosophy, BU defeated both LSU (3-1) and UTSA (2-1) in preseason exhibition matches with five different Baylor players scoring goals.
  * The NCAA has done away with overtime during the regular season this year, meaning that every game will end at the end of the 90-minute regulation time.
