INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – Baylor men’s golf tied for sixth at the season-opening Gopher Invitational Monday at Windsong Farm Golf Club.

The finish was BU’s best since a sixth-place finish at the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate last April, and Monday marked the first time four Bears finished under par since September of 2018.

Two of those under-par rounds came from Tyler Isenhart and Luke Dossey, as both led the way for BU, finishing tied for 12th with a pair of 4-under 209’s.

Dossey’s score of 209 set a new career-best 54-hole score on the heels of a 2-under 69 in the final round. The senior bogeyed two of his first five holes, but played the final 13 holes at 3-under with birdies at Nos. 9, 13 and 17. In each of the final two rounds, the Austin native combined for five birdies and no bogeys on the back nine.

Like Dossey, Isenhart finished with a 2-under 69 en route to a 4-under 209, also a new career best. Following a 1-over 36 on the opening nine, the senior finished strong with birdies at Nos. 10, 11 and 14 to record a 3-under 33 on the closing nine. The Gopher Invitational marked his first career tournament with all three rounds at par or better.

Drew Wrightson finished tied for 29th with a 1-under 212, the best finish of his career as a part of the lineup. The sophomore started strong with a birdie on his first hole of the day before closing the front nine with two bogeys and a birdie to get back to even par. Following another birdie at No. 13, Wrightson bogeyed No. 16 for a back-nine 36.

Johnny Keefer also finished in a tie for 29th at 1-under par. The senior birdied No. 9 to make the turn at 1-under, but bogeys at Nos. 11,12 and 14 and a double bogey at No. 16 dropped him back to even-par for the event. Keefer closed on a strong note with a birdie at No. 18, a hole he played at 3-under for the week.

Zach Heffernan finished 76th after a 7-over 78 on Monday. His 12 pars in the final round tied for the most on the team.

Georgia Southern captured the team title with a 20-under 832, five shots better than second-place Kansas. Wilson Andress of Georgia Southern took home individual medalist honors with a score of 11-under 202.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Luke Dossey and Tyler Isenhart set new career-best 54-hole scores.
  *   Zach Heffernan’s 43 pars tied for the second most in the field on Monday.
  *   Luke Dossey tied for the best par-3 scoring average in the field at 2.75.
  *   Drew Wrightson tied for the third-best par-5 scoring average for the week at 4.44
  *   BU had the third-most pars in the field with 184.
  *   The Bears’ 54-hole total of 842 ranks in the top-20 in program history.

Head coach Mike McGraw: “Obviously, we didn’t come up here to tie for sixth, but I did see some positives. It’s really good to see the progress Luke Dossey, Tyler Isenhart and Drew Wrightson have all made since last May. We did shoot the low round of the week, in the second round, so it shows we have some real fire power in our lineup.”
