INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – Baylor men’s golf climbed eight spots into a tie for sixth place following the opening two rounds of the Gopher Invitational Sunday at Windsong Farm Golf Club.
Four of BU's five players finished the day under par, led by senior Johnny Keefer, who is tied for 14th at 3-under par through 36 holes. Following a 1-over 72 in the first round, Keefer put the pedal down in round two, shooting a 4-under 67 punctuated by an eagle at No. 18. He played his final five holes at 4-under par.
Fellow seniors Luke Dossey and Tyler Isenhart finished Sunday a shot back of Keefer at 2-under par in a tie for 21st.
Isenhart led the team in round one with an even-par 71 and was the only Bear at par or better in the morning session. He followed that up with a 2-under 69 in the afternoon on the strength of five birdies, one of three Bears with five birdies in round two.
Dossey made a couple of early birdies in the first round before four bogeys saw him finish at 2-over in the morning. In the second round, he made his only bogey of the round at No. 5 and responded by playing his final 13 holes bogey free at 4-under par.
Drew Wrightson tied his career-best opening round score with a 1-over 72 in the morning, highlighted by an eagle at the par-5 18th. In the second round, the sophomore carded bogeys at Nos. 3 and 5, but he would not have any more blemishes on his card. He recorded a 4-under 32 on the back nine with birdies at Nos. 11, 12, 17 and 18.
Zach Heffernan shot an opening-round 73 on Sunday morning and finished a shot back of his career-best round with a 1-over 72 in the second round, thanks to 17 pars and just one bogey.
At 7-under par, BU sits just seven shots off the lead, held by Rutgers at 15-under. Garrett Cooper of Coastal Carolina leads all individuals at 8-under par.
