DALLAS, Texas – Baylor men’s golf shot a 9-under 279 on Monday, highlighted by a career day from Luke Dossey, to push BU into third place after day two at the Trinity Forest Invitational.

Dossey tied a career-best 67 to help BU shoot the best round of the day to get to 13-under par, just two shots back of the leader, Arkansas Little Rock. Playing as an individual, Baylor’s Jonas Appel shot a 5-under 67 of his own to pull into a tie for sixth, just four shots back of the leaders, SMU’s Nathan Petronzio and Furman’s Will Morlan at 9-under.

THE RUNDOWN
Luke Dossey mtached the best round of his career with a bogey-free 67. The senior birdied Nos. 2, 8, 10, 15 and 17 for his fifth round at par or better in eight rounds this season. He is tied for 10th entering Tuesday’s final round.

Johnny Keefer bounced back from an opening-round 77 to card his best score of the season, in relation to par, a 3-under 69. The senior birdied his second hole of the day at the par-5 2nd, but gave it back with a bogey at the ninth for an even-par 36 on his outward nine. He responded with birdies at Nos. 10, 15 and 16 for a bogey-free 33 on the back nine to pull into a tie for 42nd.

Tyler Isenhart shot a 2-under 70 on Monday for his second-straight round at par or better to tie for 13th with 18 holes to play. The senior picked up an early birdie at No. 2 before carding a bogey at No. 9 to get back to even par at the turn. Isenhart joined all five of his teammates with a birdie at No. 10 and added another at 14. An even-par finish consisted of bogeys at Nos. 15 and 18 surrounding a pair of birdies at 16 and 17.

Trey Bosco opened with a bogey at No. 1, but responded with birdies at Nos. 2 and 6 to get into red figures before giving two shots back with bogeys at Nos. 7 and 9. On the back nine, the junior made birdies at Nos. 10, 12 and 18, offset by bogeys at Nos. 11, 14 and 16 to settle into a tie for 13th.

Zach Heffernan finished his second round in a tie for 19th on the heels of a 2-over 74 Monday. The sophomore started strong with a birdie at No. 2, but followed with bogeys at Nos. 4, 7, 8 and 9 for a 3-over 39 on the front nine. He bounced back with birdies at Nos. 10, 12 and 13 to get back to level par, but bogeys at Nos. 14 and 17 dropped him back to 2-over for the round.

Jonas Appel carded the best round of his young career with a 5-under 67 to climb into a tie for fifth place. His bogey-free round is his fifth at par or better in just eight rounds this season.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   BU’s 44 birdies lead the field through two rounds.
  *   Baylor’s 9-under 279 is the lowest team score in relation to par since a 13-under 275 in the final round of the Rice Intercollegiate on Jan. 25, 2021.
  *   After two rounds, the Bears have the second-best par-3 scoring average in the field (2.98)
  *   Luke Dossey has the best par-3 scoring average through two rounds (2.63).
  *   Jonas Appel is tied for the best par-4 scoring average in the field (3.75)



STAT OF THE DAY

Baylor was the only team in the field to have every player in the lineup birdie the same hole on Monday, and they did it twice at Nos. 2 and 10.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears will play in the final group with Little Rock and SMU on Tuesday, beginning on the No. 1 tee. Johnny Keefer will lead off at 10:10 a.m. CT, followed by Zach Heffernan at 10:20 a.m. Tyler Isenhart will tee off at 10:30 a.m., just ahead of Trey Bosco at 10:40 a.m. Luke Dossey will go off in the anchor position at 10:50 a.m.
