LAWRENCE, Kan. – The 13th-ranked Bears defeated (RV) Kansas in Horesj Family Volleyball Center on Saturday morning, downing them in five sets, 3-2.

The Bears (12-3, 2-1) pushed the all-time series further in their favor, 29-27, against the Jayhawks (12-4, 2-2) with the five-set win. BU went 13-25, 27-25, 25-17, 13-25, 15-9 with KU to get the 3-2 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
The Bears came out firing, senior Harrison getting the first point, followed by a Kara McGhee ace. BU went up 6-1 before Kansas struck again. From there, KU went on a tear and scored four in a row, then four more in a row, where McGuyre called timeout with the score 10-8. Baylor was playing catchup earlier than they’d like, Kansas going up 14-9. McGuyre called time again at 16-9, where McGhee got a kill out of the timeout. She got another directly after, but KU continued their rampage and went up 20-11. Harrison got a kill to make it 22-13, but the BU attack errors were piling up. At set point, Baylor put up a fight in a long rally, but KU took the set, 25-13.

Set 2
Kara McGhee helped the Bears get a hot start to the second frame, getting a kill then going up for the block with Allie Sczech. As the set progressed early on, it was clear there would be a lot of back and forth. Though BU started with a 3-1 lead, it was quickly tied 3-3, 4-4, and so on. The Bears went on a 3-0 run to get their 10th, 11th and 13th point thanks to Elise McGhee, Sczech and Harrison, but KU met them again at 14-14. Kansas got the kill to take it into the media timeout, where Harrison got the kill out of it to tie it back up. The point matching continued all the way through to 20-20, where the Bears put up a block from Sczech and Kara McGhee. Kansas called timeout, and out of it, KU committed an attack error. BU challenged a ball was out on what would be Kansas’ set point, but the call was reversed in Baylor’s favor, tying it up at 23-23. Harrison got kills to tie it up at 24-24, then 25-25. Carlson and Talbert got a block to go up by one where KU called time. It was Talbert to end the set in BU’s favor, winning a joust to take it 27-25.

Set 3
The Bears got the first two points thanks to Kara McGhee and then a block from Sczech and McGhee, then Elise McGhee made it 3-1. BU had a 3-0 run thanks to attack errors from the Jayhawks, going up 6-2. Sczech had a kill, then a solo block from Harrison to go up 8-4. Elise McGhee recorded another kill and KU called timeout just after. Elise went on a tear, getting the kill to make it 10-5, then Briseño recorded her first ace of the match. The Jayhawks had a 3-0 run, stopped by two straight kills from Elise to make it 13-9. The Bears charged ahead and went up 16-11 thanks to kills from Kara McGhee and Sczech. KU called time after an attack error from a player in crimson. Out of it, Talbert made it 18-12, then Harrison made it 19-14. Elise McGhee got BU’s 20th point and her sister got the 21st. A big block from Sczech and Kara helped move them right along, with Elise and Sczech getting kills to take it to set point. A hand over the net from a Jayhawk ended the set, 25-17, to force the fourth.

Set 4
Kansas came out ready in the fourth, going up 3-0 on the Bears prompting a Baylor timeout. KU scored four straight after an attack error from a Jayhawk put the Bears on the board, but the second point didn’t come until Sczech and Kara McGhee got a block at 7-2. The Jayhawks began to run away with it, quickly leading 20-10. It didn’t go much further for the Bears, the set finishing at 25-13.

Set 5
After losing the first point, the Bears went on a 4-0 run, finishing with an Allie Sczech solo block and prompting KU to call time. Harrison fired up and got two kills, followed by one from Talbert to make it 7-4. The ball went out of bounds on a Jayhawk attack and it was 8-4, followed by another Elise McGhee kill and a KU timeout. Three points went the Jayhawks’ way and Baylor called time at 9-7. Out of it, there were back-to-back attack errors on Kansas, making it 11-7. Elise got another kill, then Kara McGhee had two, now 14-8. Kansas challenged a call and the score reversed on the next play, now 14-9. Freshman opposite Sczech delivered the final blow to finish off the set and the match at 15-9.
