LAST TIME OUT

Newcomer Aijha Blackwell registered her first 20-point performance of the season in last Thursday’s win over Incarnate Word, reaching a game-high 23 for her 20th-career 20-point outing. She added a game-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the year and 41st of her career.

The Bears forced 20-plus turnovers from their opponents in back-to-back games to start the season. Just five of BU’s opponents recorded 20-or-more turnovers last year. Baylor held UIW to less than 20 points (18) in the first half, marking the first time since holding Oklahoma State to just 14 in the opening half on March 11, 2022.

Nine of BU’s 11 points in the opening quarter were from Blackwell. Senior Jaden Owens and freshman Bella Fontleroy earned their first career starts in a Baylor uniform, as Fontleroy finished in double-figure scoring for the second-straight game, registering 11 points. The Springfield, Missouri, native was named the Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday.

DISHING IT OUT

Owens dished out a career- and team-high 12 assists, while adding 11 points off the bench, for her first career double-double in the Bears’ 88-50 win over Lamar on Nov. 7. She became the first Bear since Jordyn Oliver in 2020 to record a double-double with points and assists. Owens’ 12 assists marked the most in a game since Jordan Lewis dished out 11 at West Virginia last season. Nationally, Owens ranks eighth in total assists (16) while leading the Big 12 in the category. Additionally, her six steals are the second most in the conference.

SCOUTING SMU

SMU is 1-1 to start the year, opening with a 76-39 win over Alabama State in Dallas, before dropping a 97-74 decision on the road at No. 15/16 Oklahoma on Friday night. The Mustangs are led by second-year head coach Toyelle Wilson, who was on the Baylor women’s basketball

coaching staff from 2013-19, winning a national championship with the Bears.

Going into the 2022-23 campaign, SMU found itself predicted to finish third in the American Athletic Conference standings, just behind league frontrunners South Florida and Houston. The team has a unanimous preseason all-conference first-team selection in Savannah Wilkinson as it looks to build on last year’s fifth-place finish in the league and a WNIT appearance.

BAYLOR VS. THE STATE OF TEXAS

In Baylor women’s basketball history, the Bears are 388-227 (.631) against opponents from the state of Texas. Since 2011, Baylor has played 105 games against in-state opponents and only lost four times.

Tuesday’s matchup with SMU marks the 39th meeting all-time and the first since 1996. The Bears are 8-8 all-time against the Mustangs in Waco and this will be the first meeting in the Ferrell Center since March 3, 1990, and just third game ever played in the venue. The Mustangs have taken the last 13 meetings between the two programs, stretching from the 1991-96 seasons.

PROMOTIONS

The women’s basketball team has partnered with South Waco Elementary for a coat drive this fall. Beginning with the Bears’ season opener against Lamar, fans can bring a new or lightly used coat for kids, ages 5-13, to the marketing table on the concourse during home games from Nov. 7 to Dec. 7.
