LUBBOCK, Texas – Baylor track and field completed the second day of competition at the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock, Texas, on Saturday. Johnny Brackins found the lone first-place finals finish of the day for a championship.

It was a 26-5 ½ jump on his second attempt that sealed the deal for Brackins. Winning by over two-tenths of a meter, the freshman recorded his first conference podium finish in the top spot and goes into the NCAA regionals with a top-10 national mark.

Caira Pettway found a new spot on the Baylor record list, this time at the top. The fifth-year senior ran a 11.06-second race in the prelims of the women’s 100-meter dash to take the No. 1 spot in program history. Pettway, along with Sydney Washington, advanced to the finals in the event. On the men’s side, Isaiah Cunningham notched the fastest time in the 100 meters, running 10.17 seconds in the prelims.

Tuesdi Tidwell added some new hardware to her storied career, finishing the pole vault competition in second place after clearing 14-1 ¼.

Gontse Morake recorded a new personal-best in the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday, winning the preliminary round in 56.95 seconds. Jasmine Gryne also advanced to the next round with a 58.42-second race. For the men, Nathaniel Ezekiel led the Bears, finishing in 49.33 seconds, followed by Jayson Baldridge in 50.02.

Brackins also had a solid showing in the 110-meter hurdles, qualifying through to the finals with a fourth-place 13.89 mark. Elijah Morris will also join him in the finals after his 13.93-second race. In the women’s race, Ackera Nugent recorded a 12.74, notching the top mark in qualifiers. Alexis Duncan finished in fourth after 13.01 seconds.

Three Baylor quarter mile runners advanced to the finals, with Dillon Bedell moving on for the men, as well as Kavia Francis and Imaobong Uko advancing in the women’s race.

Aaliyah Miller was the third Bear to finish in a top spot in Saturday’s prelims, running a 2:05.80 in the 800 meters.

The 200 meters saw Mariah Ayers record another sub-23 time in the event, running a 22.84. Francis ran a 23-flat for a new PR in the event, as well as a spot in the finals. De’montray Callis (20.60) and Laurenz Cobert (20.64) finished in the top-8 to qualify.

Alex Madlock, Pettway and Koi Johnson finished in back-to-back-to-back positions in the long jump pit, with Madlock in seventh at 20-9 ¼.

After two hot days of multi-event competition, Alyssa Miller finished the heptathlon in ninth place with 4,964 points. Her event was highlighted by a second-place finish in the 200 meters.
