No. 3 Baylor MT Set to Open NCAA Postseason Play on Friday

WACO, Texas – The third-ranked and third-seeded Baylor men’s tennis squad opens 2022 NCAA Championship play on Friday at the Hurd Tennis Center, playing Abilene Christian in the first round at 6 p.m.

The Bears (26-3) face ACU (13-11) for the second time this season after the conclusion of the Texas A&M-Tulsa match at 3 p.m.

This is the 24th-consecutive season BU has seen postseason play, while also being the third-straight year and 15th time in the last 19 years the Bears have hosted. It’s the second time since 2015 that Baylor has received a top-four overall seed.

BU is 59-21 all-time in the NCAA Championships and 32-1 when hosting in Waco.

The Wildcats come to Waco after winning their conference championship, downing No. 1 seed Lamar for the WAC title on April 24.

The last time BU and ACU met was on January 24 in a doubleheader with Boise State indoor at the Hawkins Tennis Center. Baylor swept Abilene Christian, 7-0, for the win to start off the home schedule for the Bears. In that match, the singles lineup consisted of Adrian Boitan, Matias Soto, Finn Bass, Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi, Jacob Brumm and Ethan Muza. All three doubles courts won as well, with Lah/Bass on court one, Grassi Mazzuchi and Christopher Frantzen on court two, with Soto/Muza on court three.

POSTSEASON PLAY
The then-No. 4-ranked and second-seeded Baylor men’s tennis team took the Big 12 Championship for the third-straight time, winning 4-2 over the top-seeded and No. 1-ranked TCU for the crown on April 24 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.

The Bears secured the program’s 25th Big 12 title with the victory over TCU. It was the second time on the season that BU downed the Frogs when they were at the top of the ITA rankings.

Tadeas Paroulek earned the Most Outstanding Player honor from the Big 12 after going undefeated in the tournament; 1-0 on the doubles courts and 2-0 in singles. In addition, Lah (court three) and Paroulek (court five) were named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team for singles, while Bass/Lah (court one) and Boitan/Paroulek (court three) were named to the team for doubles.

In the Big 12’s postseason awards, Boitan was named Player of the Year, with Soto and Boitan being named All-Big 12 First Team Singles. Lah and Paroulek were named second-teamers. On the doubles side, Bass/Lah were named First Team, while Soto/Grassi Mazzuchi were named to the Second Team. Individual season champions by position were Boitan on court one, Paroulek on court five and Grassi Mazzuchi on court six, followed by Grassi Mazzuchi/Soto on court two for doubles and Boitan/Paroulek in a three-way tie for No. 3 doubles.
