WACO, Texas – No. 4 Baylor men’s tennis begins Big 12 Conference play on Friday night in Austin, facing No. 11 Texas at 6 p.m. at the Texas Tennis Center.

The Bears (18-2) take on the Longhorns (11-7) with hopes of making it three-straight seasons winning their conference opener. BU is 3-2 in the conference-opening match over the last six seasons, as there was no Big 12 play in 2020.

Baylor and UT met earlier this season at the Hawkins Indoor, with the Bears taking the match, 6-1, on February 7. BU clinched the doubles point on courts two and three and went 5-1 in singles to get the victory. Texas leads the all-time series, 45-26.

Since then, the Longhorns have faced nine ranked opponents, going 6-4 over that stretch, while also winning matches against unranked Rice and UCF in Austin. Texas most recently faced No. 30 Oklahoma at home, winning 5-2 over the Sooners for its third-straight win.

In the latest ITA singles and doubles rankings on March 23, the Longhorns had several ranked team members. Pierre-Yves Bailly came in at 19th, Micah Braswell 24th, Richard Ciamarra 47th, Eliot Spizzirri 66th, Siem Woldeab 85th and Chih Chi Huang at 124th. Ciamarra and Cleeve Harper are 23rd in doubles, while Spizzirri and Woldeab are 58th and Huang/Spizzirri are 59th.

Baylor is coming off the victory over then-No. 1 ranked TCU, 5-2, to face UT on the road. The Bears have not played at home since the week after that first Texas match, when they won over Tulsa and No. 7 Virginia at Hawkins on February 11-12. BU has faced nine ranked opponents since that UT match, going 8-1 in those matches.

Head coach Michael Woodson and his Baylor squad are 6-1 on the road this season so far.

Junior standout and 15th-ranked Adrian Boitan earned his third Big 12 Player of the Week honor on Wednesday after extending his win streak to 13 in dual play, all on court one, besting No. 14 Juan Carlos Aguilar of TCU. He is 7-0 in the last 10 matches and is 61-16 in his career. He and Tadeas Paroulek improved their doubles record to 9-3 after their 6-2 win on court three against TCU’s Aguilar and Pedro Vives Marcos.

Matias Soto and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi bested the No. 3 pairing of Sander Jong and Lui Maxted, 6-4, on court two to improve to 13-4 for the season, while 30th-ranked Finn Bass and Sven Lah are now 9-5 for the dual season on court one.

In spring singles play, No. 31 Lah is 10-5, Grassi Mazzuchi is 16-2, Bass is now 12-4, No. 50 Soto at 8-5, Paroulek at 7-1, and Marko Miladinovic is 5-4. Lah is looking for his 100th singles win, currently at 99-45 in his career.
