TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 5 Baylor men’s tennis finished a trip to the Grand Canyon State with a 5-2 win over No. 18 Arizona on Friday at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center, handing the Wildcats their first loss at home on the season.

The Bears (17-1) took the doubles point from the Wildcats (13-5) to improve to 12-0 when winning the opening point this season.

Senior Sven Lah, who had his 200th combined win earlier this season, is now just one singles win away from his 100th in his career after winning on court three against Arizona.

THE RUNDOWN
The Bears won the doubles point with courts two and one getting a win, respectively. The No. 80 pairing of Matias Soto and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi bested Carlos Hassey/Gustaf Strom on court two at 6-2. It was No. 18 pair Finn Bass and Sven Lah who clinched it at 6-4 over Jonas Ziverts/Herman Hoeyeraal on court one. On court three, Adrian Boitan and Tadeas Paroulek went unfinished with the Bears ahead at 5-4.

With the wins, Grassi Mazzuchi and Soto are 12-3 in dual play while Bass and Lah are 8-4. Boitan and Paroulek remain 8-2.

The Wildcats tied the match to start singles off, with Hoeyeraal besting Bass on court four, 6-1, 6-3. Grassi Mazzuchi pushed the Bears ahead with his 6-2, 6-3 win on court six over Filip Malbasic, improving to 15-1 in the dual season. Following Grassi Mazzuchi’s win was No. 42 Boitan on court one, besting No. 80 Ziverts, 6-2, 6-2, to stay perfect on the spring at 12-0.

Fourth to finish was court two, where No. 27 Soto fell to Gustaf Strom, 6-2, 6-2. Paroulek fought off a comeback from Hassey on court five to win 6-1, 7-5 and push the Bears to 4-2 and clinch the match. With the win, Paroulek improves to 6-1 on the spring. Last but not least to finish was No. 41 Lah on court three. He took the first set 7-5, dropped the second at 0-6 and then went back and forth with No. 36 Smith in the third set but came away with his 99th career singles win with a 7-6 decision in the third. Lah improves to 10-3 in spring singles play.

QUOTABLE – Head coach Michael Woodson
“Really impressive effort from the guys today. To go on this 10-day roadtrip, play indoors up in Illinois, play outdoors under the lights at Arizona State and then come outdoors during the day with altitude and wind at Arizona is really putting the team through the ringer and the result of the consistency of being able to get the job done really speaks volumes to who these young men are. So impressed with the effort. There were so many reasons to check out today, and they looked as confident or more confident than I’ve seen them all year. Arizona is such a tough team, play incredibly well at home in an amazing atmosphere and to come in there and give them their first loss, we’re very fortunate to do that on their home court. We’ll certainly be a better team as a result of it and I’m proud of the guys for going undefeated on this trip and ready to be headed back to Waco.”

NEXT UP
The Bears continue playing on the road, heading out to face Michigan on March 20 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Start time is set for 1:30 p.m. CT at the Varsity Tennis Center.
