No. 4 Baylor MT Readies for No. 58 Illinois

URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 4 Baylor men’s tennis is set to take on No. 58 Illinois on Friday in Champaign, with start time set for 6 p.m. CT at the Atkins Tennis Center.

The Bears (14-1) are facing the Illini (3-6) indoors on Friday to continue a seven-match road stretch.

Illinois has one singles player ranked in the latest ITA poll, No. 108 Olivier Stuart, and one doubles pairing of Hunter Heck and Lucas Horve at 40th.

BU is coming off a 4-3 win over then-No. 20 Oklahoma in Norman. After winning twice on the day, Sven Lah became a part of the 200 Club, meaning he has amassed 200 combined wins in singles and doubles in his career.

Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi was the clincher for the Bears, solidifying the comeback after BU lost the doubles point. Finn Bass had tied the match at 3-all with his win over No. 88 Mark Mandlik, but it was up to court five to decide the match, and Grassi Mazzuchi pulled through in his three-set battle.

Baylor leads the all-time series with Illinois, 8-6, winning three in a row and two by 4-0 sweeps.

Since a win over Chicago State on Jan. 22, the Illini had lost five-straight matches before a 5-0 win over Northern Kentucky and 4-2 upset of then-No. 22 North Carolina last Sunday.

Going into the match, Grassi Mazzuchi is 12-1, Bass is 11-2 and Lah is 8-3 in dual play, while Matias Soto is 7-2 and Marko Miladinović is 4-3. The No. 19 doubles pairing of Bass and Lah are 7-2 in dual play, while the No. 24-ranked pair of Grassi Mazzuchi and Soto is 10-2.
