EUGENE, Ore. – Thirteen members of the Baylor track and field team wrapped up their time at the USA Track and Field Championships on Sunday at Hayward Field. Laurenz Colbert was the only Bear to advance through to the World Athletics U20 Championships in the 100 meters, while Cooper Mack finished as a Team USA alternate in the shot put.

“I think the USA Championships are one of the toughest meets in the world,” said head coach Michael Ford. “I am glad the student-athletes gained some experience competing at the Under 20 and Senior Championships. I am extremely proud of Laurenz Colbert qualifying in the 100m and in the 4x1 relay pool for the Under 20 World Championships in Cali, Columbia.”

The 100-meter results never saw a time where Colbert was not leading, as he won his first-round heat, the first round overall and the finals of the race. Highlighted by a 10.21-second showing in the finals, he moved to eighth all-time on Baylor’s program sprint records. Returning on Saturday, Colbert put up another PR in the 200 meters, finishing with a bronze medal.

Mack made his green and gold debut on Friday afternoon in Eugene winning bronze in the U20 shot put competition. With his first attempt of 61-4 ¼, Mack earned the alternate spot on Team USA for the junior championships.

Michaela Francois put up a personal-best 23.74 in the preliminary round of the 200 meters on Saturday night, advancing to the finals where she would finish in eighth place after a 24.38-second race.

Taylor Whitfield and Hayden Gold opened the meet for the Bears on Thursday evening in the 5,000 meters, ending in fifth and ninth place, respectively. Summer Sergeant also competed and finished 17th in the 100 prelims and 14th in the 200 meters.

In the senior championships, Caira Pettway, Mariah Ayers, Aaliyah Miller, Alexis Duncan, Elijah Morris and Jayson Baldridge were knocked out of competition in the preliminary rounds.

Former Bear Trayvon Bromell rejoins Team USA again in the 100 meters to compete back at Hayward Field at the World Athletics Championships after winning bronze in the finals.

“And it was great seeing Trayvon Bromell made another World Championship team in the 100m,” said Ford. Both Trayvon and Laurenz will represent Baylor and the United States well.”
