TEMPE, Ariz. – Baylor men’s tennis’ Michael Woodson, Izak van der Merwe and Sven Lah earned ITA Texas Regional awards, announced Monday by the organization.

Woodson was named the Texas Region Wilson ITA Coach of the Year and van der Merwe was named the Texas Region’s ITA Assistant Coach of the Year, both for the second year in a row. Lah garnered the Texas Region ITA Senior Player of the Year accolade.

National award winners will be announced Monday, June 13, by the ITA.

Woodson has completed his first full season as head coach after being promoted from interim head coach in May of 2021. Now in his fourth year at Baylor, van der Merwe was promoted from volunteer assistant to full-time assistant coach prior to the 2020-21 season.

Woodson now has a career record of 63-9 and is 12-2 in postseason play at the helm of the program. He and van der Merwe led BU to its third-straight Big 12 Championship title and third-consecutive, 15th overall, NCAA Quarterfinals appearance in 2022. The Bears have also had three seasons in a row with 25 or more wins.

The Wilson ITA Coach of the Year honors the coach who has exhibited outstanding leadership in ways that contribute to on- and off-court team performance. The ITA Assistant Coach of the Year honors the assistant coach who has exhibited outstanding leadership in ways that contribute to on- and off-court team performance.

This was Lah’s third-straight season to reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA doubles championships, playing alongside Jimmy Bendeck, Constantin Frantzen and Finn Bass, respectively.

The duo of Bass and Lah finished the season at 25-11, 9-8 against ranked opponents, and 17-7 in dual matches. Lah is the outright career doubles wins leader with 115, passing Frantzen who earned the lead last year at 112. Lah is a three-time ITA Doubles All-American and one of seven Bears in Baylor’s 200 Club. The Ptuj, Slovenia, native has a combined win record of 220 with 105 singles victories. He ranks third among those in the 200 Club behind Benjamin Becker (245) and Lars Poerschke (221) and is the fourth Bear to be in the club with over 100 wins in both singles and doubles.

The ITA Senior Player of the Year award honors the senior student-athlete who had the best year among all student-athletes in their class.
