THE RUNDOWN
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 4 Baylor equestrian (4-3, 2-1) dropped a narrow 10-8 contest to No. 2 Texas A&M (7-1, 3-0) Saturday at the Hildebrand Equine Complex in College Station.

Despite a late charge from the Reining squad, the Bears couldn’t quite overcome the Aggies at their home arena. BU and TAMU were neck-and-neck through the first two events, with the Aggies holding a slight 5-4 advantage at the half. A strong Flat event for A&M widened the margin, and Baylor’s comeback bid came up just short at the end of the day.

Points from Savannah Hemby (89) and Madison Mitchell (86) earned BU a tie in Fences to start things off. Maddie Vorhies knotted her matchup with an 83, while Caroline Fuller’s 90 was bested by her Aggie counterpart before heading into Horsemanship.

Over in the Western arena, the Aggies edged ahead with a 3-2 win in Horsemanship right before the break. Gabrielle Marty and Marley Mainwaring were the pointwinners for the Bears with scores of 76.5 and 74.5, respectively.

Following the halftime pause, TAMU pulled away with a 4-1 event win in Flat. It was Fuller’s high score of 93 that gave Baylor its only point of the event and earned her Most Outstanding Performer honors.

Needing to pull off a 5-0 sweep in Reining, the Bears mustered three points and one tie, but it ultimately wasn’t enough. Shelby Clausen’s MOP ride of 73 led the charge, with Jenna Meimerstorf (71.5) and Andie Pratt (70.5) chipping in with tallies of their own. Madaline Callaway’s 72.5 matched her opponent, but A&M sealed the meet with a 72-70 decision in favor of Lisa Bricker over Daisy Kaufman.

NOTABLES
• Baylor moves to 4-3 against ranked opponents this season and 1-3 against top-five teams in 2021-22.
• The Bears have scored at least seven points in all seven of their meets this season.
• BU won the Reining event for the fifth time in the 2021-22 campaign.
• Caroline Fuller’s two career-high scores (93, 90) are the only marks above 90 by the Bears this season.
• Fuller gathered her third MOP of the season and first in Flat.
• Shelby Clausen collected her second MOP recognition of the year with a season-high 73.
• Madaline Callaway matched her season-high with a 72.5 in Reining.
• Gabrielle Marty scored a season-best 76.5 in Horsemanship.
• Nadalee Vasquez put down a career-high 75 in Horsemanship despite losing her point.

STAT OF THE MEET
93 – Caroline Fuller’s Flat score of 93 is the highest by a Bear since Rachael Davis scored the same on Feb. 28, 2020, at Texas A&M.

TOP QUOTES
Head coach Casie Maxwell
On today’s narrow defeat…
“It was great to be back in the competition arena today and get the spring started. We made some unfortunate mistakes which cost us some points in a few events, but nothing we can’t work out in the next few days as we prepare for OSU. I want to give a huge congratulations to Caroline Fuller and Shelby Clausen on their event high scores and MOP honors from today. They were both fantastic.”

WHAT’S NEXT
No. 4 Baylor (4-3, 2-1) remains on the road at No. 1 Oklahoma State (4-1, 3-0) on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Totusek Arena in Stillwater, Okla. First ride is set for 1 p.m. CT.
