THE RUNDOWN
LEXINGTON, Kentucky – It was a four-gold medal day for the Baylor track and field team on Friday in Day One of the Rod McCravy Memorial.

Alex Madlock had a record-breaking day in the long jump, ending with a 20-8 ½ jump on her fifth attempt. That length is not only good for a gold medal in the event, but it’s enough to bump her up to the No. 2 slot at Baylor, both as a performer and by performance. Caira Pettway and Koi Johnson also had good showings, finishing third and fourth, respectively. Pettway maxed out at 19-10 ¾ twice, while Johnson finished at 19-8.

On the men’s side, Johnny Brackins won another gold medal in the long jump, this time by setting a new personal-best of 25-8. The freshman, coming off a Big 12 Athlete of the Week performance last weekend, is set to defend his other gold medal in the triple jump on Saturday. Luke Anthony also jumped for the Bears, finishing in 10th-place.

Ackera Nugent found a familiar position at the top of the standings in the 60-meter hurdles. The sophomore ran an 8.02 race, better than a tenth of a second before the second-place finisher. Nugent and Kennedy Bailey, who ended in sixth, advance to the semifinal round on Saturday.

Three of the five women’s 60-meter competitors advanced to the next round, with Pettway in fourth, Sydney Washington in seventh and Michaela Francois in 12th. The semifinal round will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. CT, with finals scheduled one hour later.

Freshman De’montray Callis finished the preliminary rounds of the men’s 60-meters in second place with a 6.71-second race. Isaiah Cunningham finished ninth and Kamden Jackson finished 16th. All will advance to the semifinal round Saturday, scheduled just after the women’s 60-meter dash.

Nathaniel Ezekiel picked up his first individual collegiate win on Friday, with a 1:18.08 finish in the 600-meter race.

Brackins and Elijah Morris both advanced to the semifinal round of the 60-meter hurdles scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Brackins finished third across the three heats with a 7.93 time, and Morris followed in sixth.

In the Bears’ distance medley debut of the 2022 indoor season, Aaliyah Miller, Arria Minor, Lily Williams and Ellie Friesen finished fifth after a 11:45.77 relay.

Cunningham led the Bears in the 200 meters. The senior finished in seventh-place with a time of 21.5, with Jackson in 12th, Callis in 14th and Jayson Baldridge in 15th.

Washington ended the 200-meter race on Friday in fifth place, after a 24.05-second race. Mariah Ayers ended in 10th, and Demitra Carter followed in 17th.

Hannah Link had a mark of 55-0 ¼ to finish seventh in the weight throw.

TOP QUOTE
Michael Ford on the team’s performance…
“We had a solid day today. Alex Madlock and Johnny Brackins both did an awesome job. They both set personal-bests and had great jump series. The hurdle crew did well. Johnny Brackins, again, came back and ran an under 8 seconds for his first 60-meter hurdles of the year and Ackera Nugent ran an awesome time in the prelims. I am looking forward to a big day tomorrow. It’ll be good to get some 400s in and the relay, of course.”
