THE RUNDOWN
LAS VEGAS – No. 11 Baylor clinched the doubles point and never looked back as the Bears topped Illinois, 6-1, for their first win of the season.

Alina Shcherbinina and Anita Sahdiieva moved to 2-0 on the weekend as they defeated Kate Duong and Megan Heuser, 7-5. Paula Barañano and Ana Carmen Zamburek logged their first win as a tandem with a score of 6-1 over Kida Ferrari and Shivani Ingle.

While Isabella Harvison and Alicia Herrero Linana dropped their doubles match to Josie Frazier and Ashley Yeah, 6-4, the two Bears roared back with gritty three-set wins in singles.

Harvison was the clincher for Baylor as she fought back after dropping her first set, 2-6, to win the next two – 6-4, 6-2, to top Yeah.

Two courts down, Herrero was in a third-set thriller after going 6-2, 1-6 through the first two. The senior then fought off five match points to win the third set, 7-6.

Shcherbinina and Baranano also clawed through three sets for victories. Shcherbinina topped Duong, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1, and Barañano defeated Kasia Treiber, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.

Sahdiieva won her match in two sets – 6-3, 6-4 – over Frazier.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Freshmen Alina Shcherbinina and Anita Sahdiieva finished the weekend 4-0. The duo won both of their doubles matches together in addition to each of their singles contests.
  *   Junior Paula Barañano also won both of her singles matches in Vegas.
  *   Junior transfer Isabella Harvison notched her first singles win as a Bear.
  *   Freshman Ana Carmen Zamburek recorded her first win as a Bear in doubles.
