THE RUNDOWN
LUBBOCK, Texas – Baylor started its 2022 indoor season at the Corky Classic in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday.

The Bears came out with a strong showing, beginning with junior Rylie Smith in the women’s pole vault B section. She reached a height of 11-11.75 and finished second in the competition.

In the weight throw, Mikayla Deshazer, Hannah Link and Samone Turner all recorded top-10 performances, but the spotlight was on Link as she threw for a PR of 56-6 and finished in fifth place. That throw also moved Link into No. 4 for weight throwers all-time at Baylor. Deshazer finished ninth with Turner following in 10th.

Koi Johnson amassed one of the biggest cheers of the night as she ended the long jump (B) with a 19-5.5 mark, which sets a new personal best and helps her find a spot on the BU all-time list. Kiara Rhodes ended in fifth place with a jump of 18-8.5 and Alexandra Rutenis finished 15th with 17-6.

Luke Anthony was the only Bear to compete in the men’s long jump (B), and he ended 20th with 20-1.

Chris Dupree ran the men’s 600 yards and finished in 11th-place with a time of 1:12.98. Nathaniel Ezekiel also competed in the event but was disqualified due to a lane infraction. If Ezekiel’s time stood, the first-semester freshman would’ve finished first and moved to second place all-time at Baylor before starting his first class at the school.

Preston York was Baylor’s lone competitor in the B section of the men’s 400 meters and finished in 12th-place with a time of 50.88 seconds.

Demitra Carter and Cierra Wash ran the B section of the women’s 200 meters and finished in sixth and 12th, respectively. Carter ran 24.86 seconds, followed by Wash’s 25.50.

Laurenz Colbert capped the night for the Bears with his fourth-place finish in the B section of the men’s 200 meters. His finishing time was 22.01.
