Baylor Softball Splits Doubleheader with Loyola Marymount and No. 6 UCLA

THE RUNDOWN
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The Bears split Saturday’s doubleheader with Loyola Marymount and No. 6 UCLA, taking down the Lions 7-4 before falling to the Bruins 7-4 to close out day two of the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, California.

Game 1: Baylor 7, Loyola Marymount 4
The Bears and Lions got off to a slow start with a couple batters from each team reaching base on singles or fielder choices, but no runs coming across through the second.

Baylor kicked off the scoring first, with McKenzie Wilson showing off her speed and recording an inside the park home run on a ball driven into the left field corner. The Bears then steadily scored a run in the next three innings, on a groundout, a sacrifice fly and a single from Wilson.

The Lions brought the game within a run in the bottom of the sixth, when they capitalized off of an error and a sacrifice fly making the score, 4-3. With the game on the line Loyola Marymount hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 7th to knot things up and take Baylor into their first extra inning game of the season.

With international tie-breaker rules in effect, Baylor had a runner placed on second to begin the eighth inning before Kendall Cross reached base on a bunt to the pitcher. With Kaci West up to bat, the freshman blasted her first home run of her career over the wall in left field, plating three and giving the Bears the, 7-4 advantage.

After the first two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Dariana Orme came in to relieve West, striking out the last batter and winning it for the Bears.

Baylor had 13 hits, with four Bears recording a multi-hit game.

Game 2: Baylor 4, UCLA 7
The Bears fell behind early in their second game of the day, after the Bruins hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first to go up 4-0.

Settling into her groove, starting pitcher Dariana Orme struck out six batters through the first three innings. Getting a run back, Baylor plated a run in the top of the third, after a stand-up double from McKenzie Wilson followed up with a single to center field from Sydney Collazos.

After the Bears went down in order in the top half of the fourth, UCLA plated another run on a single down the left field line taking the 5-1 lead.

The Bruins extended their lead in the sixth after a double brought home two unearned runs.

Battling until the end, Rhein Trochim drew a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh inning, before singles from Emily Hott and Wilson loaded the bases. Collazos hit a two RBI single to right field trimming down the UCLA lead. Wilson then scored on a sacrifice fly from Aliyah Binford, but a fielder’s choice ended the Bears seventh inning rally.

Orme pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts, while Collazos went 3-for-4 at the plate three RBI.
