WACO, Texas – No. 1 Baylor acrobatics & tumbling has earned weekly honors from the NCATA, the organization announced Wednesday, with Emily Tobin earning her second-straight Athlete of the Week nod and Bayley Humphrey being named Specialist of the Week.

Freshman Jordan Gruendler was named Honorable Mention Freshman of the Week as well.

Tobin, a junior top and tumbler from Templeton, Calif., earned NCATA Athlete of the Week honor for the second time this season following top-ranked Baylor’s win over East Texas Baptist last week. Tobin competed in 12 heats and the team event for the Bears against ETBU, recording a score of 9.50 or higher in 10 of those heats. Her performance was highlighted by a perfect 10.0 in the synchronized pyramid and four scores of 9.90 in the compulsory toss, five-element acro, inversion pyramid and six-element tumbling pass.

Humphrey, a sophomore base from Chandler, Ariz., helped BU post a pair of 10.0 scores in the pyramid event. The perfect scores came in the synchronized and open pyramid heats. During the two heats, Humphrey served as the solo mid-base. The synchronized heat requires a hand-to-foot connection, while the open pyramid included a hand-to-hand connection.

Gruendler, a freshman top from San Antonio, Texas, competed in two heats and team event for Baylor this week. She helped the Bears record a perfect 10.0 in the open pyramid, a 9.80 in the seven-element acro and she was part of Baylor’s team event that scored a 97.33. In each of her heats, Gruendler competed skills that have never been performed previously in the sport. In seven-element acro she competes a one-arm split handstand hold, while she performs a press up to handstand on a mid-level base during the open pyramid, both with Humphrey as her base.

Humphrey, Gruendler, Tobin and the rest of the Baylor squad hosts No. 3 Oregon on Sunday with a 3 p.m. start time for the meet in the Ferrell Center. Fans will receive free gold pom poms while supplies last. It will also be the Alumni Reunion for BU A&T.
