No. 1 Baylor A&T Has Two Earn NCATA Weekly Awards

WACO, Texas – The No. 1 Baylor acrobatics & tumbling squad had two student-athletes earn NCATA awards after the first week of competition, announced Wednesday by the association.

Junior Emily Tobin was named Athlete of the Week while freshman Jordan Gruendler earned Specialist of the Week after the season-opening win against Mary-Hardin Baylor on February 5.

Tobin, a junior top and tumbler from Templeton, Calif., earned NCATA Athlete of the Week honors after leading Baylor to a score of 277.930 against Mary-Hardin Baylor on Saturday. Tobin competed in 10 heats and team event for the Bears, taking part in seven heats that scored a 9.70 or higher. Tobin’s performance was highlighted by her execution as a top in compulsory toss (scored 9.95), synchronized pyramid (scored 9.90), acro five-element (scored 9.85) and inversion pyramid (scored 9.85). She also competed as a tumbler in the quad pass and team event.

Gruendler, a freshman top from San Antonio, Texas, excelled in the acro event for Baylor this week, helping the Bears to a score of 9.75 in the six-element acro and a 9.80 in the seven-element acro. Gruendler showed great hand-to-hand balance as a top in both acro heats. She executed a one-arm handstand in the six-element acro heat, which has never been competed in the sport of acrobatics & tumbling. In addition, she performed as a top in heat three of pyramid, executing a pyramid that has also never been competed, with a 9.9 score.

Aliyah Kaloostian earned Honorable Mention Freshman of the Week. The San Antonio, Texas, native competed in three heats and the team event for BU, highlighted by her 9.825 performance in the open tumbling pass. In the team event, she performed one standing and two running tumbling passes as well.
