Story lines

  * Baylor opens its 2022 season at home with a match against Minnesota on Thursday before hosting Wisconsin to wrap things up on Sunday. After the Bears started last season on the road for only the eighth time in program history, Baylor will get to play in front of the home crowd to start the season.
  * BU is 15-2-1 all time when opening the season at home. The last home season opening win was against Northwestern State on Aug. 25, 2019 and they won 4-2.
  * The 2022 season marks the 26th season of the Baylor Soccer program.
  * This season also marks the beginning of the Michelle Lenard coaching era, as she was selected as the Bears sixth head coach in program history. She comes from an illustrious DII career at DBU, where she led the Patriots to 13 conference championships and amassed a 201-77-25 record over 14 seasons.
  * Coach Lenard brought with her from DBU assistant coach Lea Sedwick Caffey and director of soccer operations, Maggie Scales. Rounding out her staff is assistant coach, Cole Ouren and volunteer assistant coach Cameron Carter.
  * Coming off a 2021 campaign that featured a 4-2-3 conference finish, BU finished third in the conference after being selected to finish seventh in the preseason poll.
  * Baylor has a 34 person roster this season and features 19 returners and 15 newcomers.
  * BU has eight starters returning, including Kayley Ables, Maddie Algya, Mackenzie Anthony, Ava Colberg, Sarah Hornyak, Elizabeth Kooiman, Taylor Moon and Gabby Mueller. Joining the starters are key members off the bench Chloe Brown, Olivia Mack, Alyssa Navarette, Lorelai Stramrood, Haven Terry, Sophie Wilson and Kate Zimmerman.
  * Baylor lost three key members from the 2021 roster and five-year starters, Jennifer Wandt, Ally Henderson-Ashkinos and Sarah Norman.
  * Joining the 2022 squad are five transfers Jenna Patterson (DBU), Blythe Obar (DBU), Ashley Merrill (DBU), Micah Beasley (Auburn) and Madison martin (Texas Tech).
  * The nine incoming freshmen are Skye Leach, Reneta Vargas, Annika Fredell, Trinity Egerton, Kylie Finney, Morgan Greensage, Hallie Augustyn, Hannah Augustyn, Ashlee Zirkel and Camryn Ciborowski.
  * The NCAA has done away with overtime during the regular season this year, meaning that every game will end at the end of the 90-minute regulation time.
  * Kayley Ables was the lone Baylor player named to the Preseason All-Big 12 team. A fifth-year senior for the program, she has been a key component to the Baylor backline, aka the “No-Goal Patrol.”
  * Taylor Moon was named a preseason Forward to Watch this season by United Soccer Coaches.
  * The front line this season will likely see transfer Jenna Patterson and returners Olivia Mack and Elizabeth Kooiman frequently with depth and help off the bench.
  * Veteran fifth year senior, Maddie Algya will hold down the midfield with help from DBU transfers, Ashley Merrill and Blythe Obar. With a more possession focused playing style, this will give many players chances at scoring.
  * Returners Kayley Ables and Ava Colberg will hold down the defense with the help of freshman twins Hallie and Hannah Augustyn. Without fifth-year starter Jennifer Wandt in goal, the Bears will likely turn to Lauren Traywick and Texas Tech transfer Madison Martin, while keeping options open with two other freshman goalkeepers on the roster.
  * With coach Lenard’s new playing philosophy, BU defeated both LSU (3-1) and UTSA (2-1) in preseason exhibition matches with five different Baylor players scoring goals.
