THE RUNDOWN
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Baylor baseball (16-16) was defeated at No. 19 Texas State (25-9) on Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos.

Kyle Nevin led the Bears with three hits and an RBI, while Alex Gonzales and Nolan Rodriguez each drove in a run as well. Anderson Needham made his first appearance on the mound since Feb. 25 and threw a scoreless inning, but TXST scored in each of the first four frames to pull away.

BU got the scoring started with two runs in the top of the first, as Jack Pineda walked and Tre Richardson doubled off the right field wall. After an intentional walk to Jared McKenzie, Nevin reached on an infield single which plated the game’s first run, but was then erased on a double play that moved the tally to 2-0.

The Bobcats scored the next five runs with one in the first, two in the second and two in the third to move out to a 5-2 lead. After Gonzales’ sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth, TXST put up a five spot in the bottom half to go ahead 10-3.

From there, each side would only score once more as Texas State benefitted from an RBI double in the seventh and Baylor scratched one across in the ninth off an RBI groundout from Rodriguez.

Seven Baylor pitchers appeared in the contest and combined to strikeout eight batters. Cole Stasio racked up a trio of punchouts, while Needham and Hambleton Oliver worked scoreless outings

TOP QUOTES
Head coach Steve Rodriguez
On tonight’s game…
“You have to tip your cap to Texas State, they’re a veteran team, very veteran offense, older group and they showed it tonight. The biggest thing is we’ve been falling behind guys, not getting strike one early on in the counts. Like I told our guys, we need to continue to get better, be honest with ourselves with the results and find a way to improve. As soon as we realize that certain things aren’t working, we need to make sure to make those adjustments.”

WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor (16-16, 2-7) returns home to Baylor Ballpark for a three-game series against Kansas (13-18, 1-5), beginning Thursday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m. CT.
