Baylor MT’s Soto Named Big 12 Player of the Week
Senior earns accolade after 4-0 weekend at the Hurd

IRVING, Texas – No. 4 Baylor men’s tennis senior Matias Soto was named Big 12 Player of the Week, announced Tuesday by the conference.

Soto, a native of Copiapo, Chile, went 4-0 overall for the weekend against No. 44 Oklahoma State and No. 34 Oklahoma.

On the doubles courts, the 21st-ranked duo of Soto and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi won 6-3 over the Cowboys’ Garcia and Maxim Verboven on court two to start doubles play. Against OU’s Baptiste Anselmo and Mark Mandlik, they won 6-3 to clinch the doubles point.

In singles, No. 38 Soto defeated OSU’s Alex Garcia on court two to clinch the match, 6-4, 6-4, and then had a ranked win over No. 41 Mason Beiler of OU on court one, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(4), to finish the match on Senior Day.

Soto has been ranked in singles for the last 10 matches and for seven doubles matches with Grassi Mazzuchi.

He is now 11-6 for dual play in singles, 13-7 for the season, and 84-39 for his career. The fifth-year senior is now 4-0 on court one and 7-6 on court two this season. Against nationally ranked opponents, Soto now has three wins. He’s 3-1 in Big 12 play this season and improved to 11-7 against conference opponents in his career.

In doubles, he and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi improved to 17-4 for the season, all on court two. They are 5-1 against ranked opponents and 7-3 in their last 10 matches. Against Big 12 opponents they are a perfect 4-0. In his career, he is 85-29 in doubles, while going 18-6 this season with different partners. He is now 9-1 all-time against conference opponents in doubles play.

Soto helped the Bears improve to 21-3 on the season, including 3-1 in Big 12 play, 11-1 record at home and 8-3 against nationally-ranked opponents.

NEXT UP
The Bears finish out the regular season in Lubbock when they face Texas Tech on April 16 with a 5 p.m. start time at the McLeod Tennis Center.
