WACO, Texas – Veteran Baylor broadcaster, Derek Smith, and Hall of Famer, Sophia Young-Malcolm, will call Baylor women’s basketball games beginning this year, Baylor Athletics announced Friday.

Smith will be the program’s play-by-play voice, and Young will serve as the analyst.

"We are excited to announce the addition of Derek Smith to the Baylor Women's Basketball Family," head coach Nicki Collen said. "Derek's extensive broadcast experience combined with Sophia's enthusiasm and experience as a pillar of this program's success will truly be special. Their passion and excitement will spread far beyond the broadcast booth."

Smith is the well-known public address voice at McLane Stadium and the Ferrell Center as well as the play-by-play broadcaster for Baylor Baseball and cohost of pre- and post-game radio coverage on football game days.

A 2005 Baylor graduate, he serves as a senior brand strategy specialist in Baylor Marketing & Communications, where he coordinates coverage of Baylor research and hosts the Baylor Connections podcast.

Young, a Baylor Athletics Hall of Fame (2016) and Texas Sports Hall of Fame (2021) inductee is also a member of Collen’s staff, serving as the Assistant AD for Player Development.

Young was a two-time All-American as she helped lead Baylor to the 2005 NCAA National Championship. During her time at Baylor from 2002-06, she became one of seven players in BU history to amass 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career.

At the time of her selection, Young was Baylor’s highest-ever draft pick in the WNBA when she was selected fourth overall by the San Antonio Silver Stars in 2006. Young played 301 career games over nine seasons and earned three WNBA All-Star selections while recording 4,300 career points and 1,807 rebounds from 2006-15.

Smith and Young will broadcast Baylor Bear basketball games on the Baylor Sports Network from Learfield.
