WACO, Texas – Retired Baylor softball coach Mark Lumley (Coach Lum) has been chosen as the 2021 recipient of the NFCA Donna Newberry “Perseverance” Award. This award recognizes and NFCA member who has demonstrated extraordinary strength of will and character in the fight to overcome a physical, mental or social adversity that presented an additional challenge to the already demanding job of a coach.

Coach Lum passed away on December 27, 2020 after a long battle with cancer. During his fight, coaching was his life. He never missed a practice or game and always showed up for his student-athletes.

During his courageous battle, Coach Lum fought cancer four different times and received countless treatments. During all of this, his love for softball and commitment to the game never wavered. Lumley officially retired on September 30, 2020, but stayed on staff as assistant director of operations, showing just how committed he was to do what he loved.

Lumley began his collegiate coaching career in 1998, when head Baylor softball coach Glenn Moore brought him to LSU to coach alongside him. Lum came with Coach Moore to Baylor in 2000 and served as an assistant to Moore for 20 years. During his time at Baylor, the softball team made 13 NCAA regionals, four Women’s College World Series appearances, he coached many All-Americans, and traveled around the world with FCA on mission trips.

Some of Coach Lum’s proudest moments were when students would accept Christ into their lives. He helped lead hundreds of people to the Lord.

Coach Lum will be recognized at the Awards Brunch on Dec. 11 in Las Vegas, Nev., during the last day of the NFCA National Convention.
