THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – No. 8 Baylor equestrian (1-1) suffered a 10-9 loss in its Big 12 and home opener to No. 4 Oklahoma State (1-0) Friday afternoon at the Willis Family Equestrian Center in Waco.

The Bears held a 5-4 halftime advantage and led 9-8 going in to the final two rides, but the Cowgirls pulled out the final two points to steal the victory.

BU opened the day with a 3-2 event win in Fences with Emma Fletcher, Caroline Fuller and Madison Mitchell collecting points. Over in the Western arena, the Bears and Cowgirls tied 2-2 in Reining. Daisy Kaufman and Jenna Meimerstorf won their points with scores of 71 and 72, respectively.

Following the halftime break, Baylor hung tough in both Flat and Horsemanship, but dropped both events 3-2. Fuller and Dominika Silvestri gathered points in Flat, each scoring above an 80. Meanwhile, Gabrielle Marty and Nadalee Vasquez put the tallies on the board in Horsemanship, but it ultimately wasn’t enough.

Meimerstorf and Silvestri each picked up Most Outstanding Performer honors for their efforts, the first of each of their careers.

• Baylor is now 1-1 against ranked opponents this season.
• BU picked up its second Fences win of the season.
• Two Bears earned their first-career MOP honors in Jenna Meimerstorf and Dominika Silvestri.
• Caroline Fuller won both of her points in Fences and Flat.
• Isabella Rosa made her collegiate debut with a 69.5 in Horsemanship.

“I think our team rode very hard. We did try not to leave any room to be beaten. We made a few mistakes along the way and we can’t afford those against a team like Oklahoma State. I thought our girls rode every point like they wanted to win it and I love where they’re starting. I think they’re extremely confident and know that they have the ability. There are things within their reach that they can go in and fix quickly. That will be the goal over the next four days, to recoup. to build off this confidence and to clean those little things up.”

“My warmup started out a little rocky. I knew that I had to wind him (the horse Z) down. He started out a little fresh. I did a lot of transitions to make him slow down. I studied my pattern really hard before I went in the ring. I knew that I had to be bold but also patient, so he’d take a breath as well. Then I went in there and did what I had to do.”

No. 8 Baylor (1-1) returns to the Willis Family Equestrian Center next Friday for a 1 p.m. contest with No. 5 Texas A&M (1-0).
