WACO, Texas – Baylor’s NaLyssa Smith was named the Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon. It marked the first weekly award of the season for Smith and the fourth of her career.



Smith, named the Cancun Challenge Mayan Division MVP, averaged 19 points and 15.3 rebounds as the Bears went 3-0 in Mexico with wins against Fordham, Arizona State and Houston. The senior forward shot 47.7 percent from the floor and went 1-for-2 from the perimeter.



Smith is one of four student-athletes in the country who is averaging 20+ points and 15+ rebounds per game – Kansas State’s Ayoka Lee (24.7 ppg/11.3 rpg), Michigan’s Naz Hillmon (21.8 ppg/10.0 rpg), Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kittley (20.6 ppg/10.3 rpg) and Smith (20.6 ppg/13.4 rpg).



The Converse, Texas, native – who leads the country with 94 rebounds – is top-five in the nation in defensive rebounds (5th, 9.1), double-doubles (2nd, six) and rebounds per game (3rd, 13.4).
