WACO, Texas – Team Gold defeated Team Green three games to two in the 2021 Green & Gold World Series.

The annual best-of-five intrasquad series began on Friday, Nov. 12, and ran through Saturday, Nov. 20, with the Gold squad coming out on top following a series-clinching win in Game Four.

Veterans Tyler Thomas and Ian Groves captained the Green Team, while Blake Helton and Nicolas Balsano lead the Gold Team. As per tradition, rosters were drafted prior to Game One by the captains.

Gold jumped out to a 1-0 series lead by winning Game One, 5-3. RBI hits by Balsano, Chase Wehsener and Mason Marriott gave Gold an early 5-0 lead and Matt Voelker held off the Green bats. Harrison Caley and Antonio Valdez chipped in with a couple of RBI knocks for Green, but Gold’s Hambleton Oliver finished it out on the mound to seal the opening victory.

In Game Two, Green came from behind to even the series with a 3-2 win thanks in part to an Ian Groves two-run home run and go-ahead sacrifice fly by Caley. Chandler Freeman escaped a dangerous bottom of the seventh, striking out a pair of Gold hitters with the bases loaded to knot the series.

Then in Game Three, Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo’s two-run triple proved to be the difference maker as Gold collected a 5-2 win to go back in front. Brett Garcia turned in a solid outing on the bump for Gold and Oliver once again closed it out.

Gold clinched the series in Game Four with a 4-3 victory, powered by Jared McKenzie’s two-run homer. Green got on the board first behind Kyle Nevin’s RBI single, but Gold answered right back with the McKenzie blast. Two more runs came across for Gold in the fourth inning, including an RBI double by Tyler McCuistion. Green got one back in the fifth with an RBI off the bat of Valdez and one more in the seventh, but it was Oliver again who sealed the deal and the series for Gold.

Finally in Game Five, Green got one back following a big game from Nevin. His RBI single put Green in front, but McKenzie hit another two-run home run to give Gold the lead. However, Nevin would get the last laugh with a two-run walk-off home run that put a cap on the 2021 GGWS.
