Baylor Women’s Golf Moves Up to 16th at NCAA Championship

THE RUNDOWN
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Baylor women’s golf climbed six spots on the leaderboard after shooting 5-over-par 293 in Saturday’s second round at the NCAA Championship. The Bears’ posted the 10th-best second-round score in the 24-team field and now sit in 16th place at 25-over 601 after two rounds at Grayhawk Golf Club.



Baylor (+25) is now just one stroke back of the 54-hole cut, as the top-15 teams following Sunday’s third round will advance to a final round of stroke play. The top-8 teams after Monday’s fourth round of stroke play advance to match play to determine the 2021 national champion.



Stanford (-7) leads the field, followed by Duke (-3), Texas (+1), Florida State (+7), Wake Forest (+9), Oklahoma State (+10), Ole Miss (+11), LSU (+12), Arizona (+14), Oregon (+14), Arizona State (+15), Michigan State (+19), UCLA (+19), Michigan (+24), South Carolina (+24), Baylor (+25), Kent State (+26), Georgia (+26), Maryland (+27), Auburn (+28), Virginia Tech (+30), Kentucky (+30), USC (+31) and Alabama (+42).



Baylor’s best second-round score came from freshman Britta Snyder, who remained at or below par the entire day and posted a 2-under 70 to move into a tie for 61st place at 6-over 150. Gurleen Kaur shot 1-over 73 and is tied for 81st place at 8-over 152, while Elodie Chapelet carded 2-over 74 and moved into a tie for 18th place at 1-over 145. Freshmen Rosie Belsham and Hannah Karg rounded out the Baylor scorecard with matching rounds of 4-over 76, with Belsham moving into a tie for 96th place at 10-over 154 and Karg tied for 111th place at 12-over 156.



The Bears began the second round on the back-9 and got off to a strong start, playing the first five holes bogey-free at a combined 4-under after playing the same holes (Nos. 10-14) at 10-over in Friday’s first round. BU was 1-under at the turn, with Snyder and Chapelet both 1-under, Kaur sitting at even-par, and Belsham and Karg both 1-over.



Baylor will be in the afternoon wave for Sunday’s third round. The field will be cut to 15 teams and the top-9 individuals from non-advancing teams following the third round.



STAT OF THE DAY

5 - All five Bears made multiple birdies in the second round after only two of five did so in the first round. Snyder led the team with four birdies, including two of her final three holes to get to 2-under. Chapelet carded three birdies, while Kaur, Belsham and Karg had two birdies apiece.



WHAT’S NEXT

Baylor is paired with Kent State and Georgia for Sunday’s third round, and they’ll begin on the back-9 for a second-straight day. Karg is up first at 1:30 p.m. CT, and she’ll be followed by Belsham, Kaur, Snyder and Chapelet in 11-minute intervals, respectively.
