Baylor Track & Field: Kubicek, Madlock Earn Medals on Day Two
The Bears locked in 13 spots for Sunday finals, including Aaliyah Miller setting meet record

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Alex Kubicek and Alex Madlock both earned spots on the podium, and several student-athletes qualified for finals to highlight day two for Baylor track & field Saturday at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships at R.V. Christian Track.

“It was a solid day,” head coach Todd Harbour said. “It was your typical track meet - some highs and some lows, some great performances and a few disappointments. Overall, we competed hard.”

Madlock finished seventh in the women’s long jump to score two points for the Bears, recording a personal-best mark of 20-8 (6.30m). The senior from Bangs, Texas, is now the sixth-best long jump performer in school history, ahead of associate women’s head coach Stacey Smith.

Kubicek put together a career performance in the women’s pole vault, recording a personal-best 13-7.25 (4.15m) to finish in third place. The freshman from Pearland, Texas, is the third-best outdoor performer in school history.

“I thought the two Alex’s were definitely the stars today,” Harbour said. “Going from the 13th and 14th seed to scoring, top three in the Big 12 and making the finals in one of the toughest long jump finals in Big 12 women’s history. To score and get a big PB. That was huge for those two. That’s what you hope for in a conference meet, and those two did a great job.”

The Bears locked in 13 spots for Sunday finals, including Aaliyah Miller setting the meet record in the prelims of the women’s 800 meters. The senior from McKinney, Texas, recorded a time of 2:01.82 to hold the best time of the day by almost four seconds.

Ackera Nugent advanced to the finals in both the women’s 100-meter hurdles and the 100 meters. The freshman from Kingston, Jamaica, clocked in at 13.04 in the 100m hurdles and 11.31 in the 100m.

Deshaun Jones and Eli Morris went 2-3 overall to advance to the men’s 110-meter hurdles final. Jones registered a personal-best time of 13.90, while Morris achieved a personal best of his own at 14.05.

Kavia Francis and Arria Minor moved on to the women’s 400 meters final with times of 52.65 (personal best) and 53.41, respectively.

In the men’s 400 meters, Howard Fields III cruised into the finals with a heat victory and the second-best time of the prelims at 46.06.

Kamden Jackson punched his ticket to the finals in both the men’s 100 meters and 200 meters, recording a personal-best 10.28 in the 100 and a time of 20.89 in the 200.

Mariah Ayers (4th) and Francis (7th) both qualified for the finals of the women’s 200 meters, with Ayers clocking a personal-best 23.08 and Francis finishing in 23.21.

Jayson Baldridge earned a spot in the finals of the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.39.

“We got a lot of people qualified for the finals tomorrow,” Harbour said. “We didn’t get everybody, but we got a lot qualified tomorrow, so it was overall a good day.”
