WACO, Texas – Baylor junior KC Lightfoot tied a league record with his fifth-career Big 12 Athlete of the Week award, the conference office announced Wednesday.

“This is another very nice honor for KC,” head coach Todd Harbour said. “He joins some very elite company. A great way to start the season.”

Lightfoot is coming off a historic performance this past weekend at the Corky Classic in Lubbock, where he broke Chris Nilsen’s indoor pole vault collegiate record with a mark of 19-5.75 (5.94m) that also ranks as the best in the world this year. The Lee's Summit, Mo., native bested his own school record by 4.25 inches and holds the top nine marks on Baylor's all-time indoor performances list.

“I’m excited to start the season off right with Big 12 Athlete of the Week,” Lightfoot said. “Things are feeling good early in the season, and I’m expecting some bigger bars to come.”

This is the fifth weekly accolade of Lightfoot’s career (Feb. 19, 2020; Jan. 29, 2020; Jan. 22, 2020; Feb. 20, 2019), tying the Big 12 record for most in an indoor career (Ryan Crouser, Texas, 2012-16). Lightfoot is the only multiple winner in Baylor indoor history, and his latest honor gives Baylor 14 men's indoor track & field athlete of the week awards in program history. It is the 45th overall conference athlete of the week honor (men's and women's indoor/outdoor) for the Bears' track & field program since 2002.

Lightfoot was also named National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday for his record-setting performance, the second time he has claimed the national honor (Feb. 18, 2020).

Lightfoot and Baylor are set for a trip to College Station, Texas, on Saturday for the Aggie Invitational.
