No. 5 Seed Baylor VB Headed to Wisconsin for Sweet 16

WACO, Texas – No. 5 seed Baylor volleyball is headed back to Madison, Wis., to take on No. 12 seed Minnesota in the Regional Semifinals of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament on Thursday, Dec. 9.

After defeating Washington State in the Second Round on Friday, the Bears (22-5) are experiencing déjà vu by entering the same setup as they played in earlier in the season, facing the Gophers in Wisconsin as they did for the Big Ten-Big 12 Challenge. BU defeated Minnesota when they were ranked No. 7 by the AVCA in a 3-1 match on Aug. 27.

Since then, Minnesota is now 22-8 overall, defeating South Dakota and No. 18 Stanford to advance to the Sweet 16. Their seven other losses on the year came against No. 5 Wisconsin(twice), No. 1 Texas, No. 5 Florida, Michigan, No. 14 Penn State and No. 9 Purdue.

Match time is set for 2 p.m. CT on ESPNU, with Courtney Lyle and Karch Kiraly on the call in UW Field House.

The winner of Thursday’s match will play the winner of No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 13 UCLA in the Regional Finals on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. CT on ESPNU.

BEAR BITES

  *   Baylor is 10-5 under head coach Ryan McGuyre in NCAA Tournaments and 13-9 all-time in NCAA Tournaments.
  *   The Bears have now made it to the Regional Semifinals for three-straight seasons.
  *   BU is making its sixth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and has won 20 or more matches in each of the last six seasons.
  *   Baylor had 19 of its 25 regular-season matches against teams that are now in the tournament, going 14-5 during that time. The Bears are now 16-5 overall this season against teams in the NCAA Tournament.
