THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – Baylor men’s tennis tallied 10 singles wins on Saturday’s second day of the ITA Texas Regionals held at Waco Regional Tennis Center.

In his first singles action as a Bear, graduate transfer Spencer Furman picked up two victories to earn a spot in Flight One’s quarterfinals. The Seattle native took care of Axel Vila Antuna of Lamar in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 before ousting BYU’s Sean Hill in a thrilling three-set match 7-6(5), 0-6, 6-2.

Charlie Broom and Matias Soto also went undefeated, reserving their place alongside Furman in the quarters. Broom made quick work of Louisiana’s Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez 6-1, 6-1 before battling back to defeat Ilgiz Valiev from Texas Tech 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(2). Meanwhile, second-seeded Soto cruised to a pair of straight-set wins over opponents from TCU and Texas.

Finn Bass, No. 1-seed Sven Lah, Sebastian Nothhaft and Nick Stachowiak all split their two singles matches, going 1-1 on the second day of the tournament. Lah was upset in the second round in a grueling 6-7(4), 6-3, 7-6(7) match with BYU’s Jack Barnett, while the remaining Bears bounced back from morning losses to pull even on the day. Redshirt freshman Rahul Dhokia was the only winless BU player, struggling in two straight-set defeats.

Play resumes on Sunday with all eight Bears in action once more at 9 a.m. CT. Championship doubles matches will begin the day’s slate of tennis, followed by more singles play.

Top-seeded duo Broom/Lah will challenge fellow Bears and No. 2-seed Soto/Stachowiak in the Red Bracket final, while Furman/Bass will take on TCU’s Fearnley/Martin for the White Bracket title.
