WACO, Texas – In its final tune-up before the Big 12 Championships, Baylor cross country will compete Saturday at the Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station, Texas.

“We just want to continue to get better,” associate head coach Jon Capron said. “This is a little more local competition. We haven’t seen a couple of these teams, so we’re excited to race some new faces and see where we are. We’re going to have our work cut out for us.”

The men's 8K starts at 9:30 a.m. CT at the Watts Cross Country Course, followed by the women's 6K at 10:15 a.m. CT. Baylor will be going up against host Texas A&M, LSU, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech and UTA.

“There are some good teams down there,” Capron said. “We’re also excited to get on A&M’s course. It’s a great course. It should be a little bit faster than some of the courses this year. We’re looking for another opportunity to be a little further down in the training cycle and apply that to a fast course and see what we get.”

The Bears have produced strong performances in both of their meets thus far in 2020, defeating ACU in the season opener and finishing fourth (women’s) and sixth (men’s) at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater. Celia Holmes has led the Baylor women’s team with a win at ACU and a seventh-place individual finish at the OSU meet.

“It’s been really nice to have Celia pulling the front on the ladies’ side and having Lily (Jacobs) capable of being right there with her,” Capron said. “Sarah Antrich has made some really good moves at practice recently and she’s had some good performances at this course in particular, so we expect her to be up there in the top three to help us move up in the standings. We want to get some of our other veterans like Maddie (Johnston) and Mazie (Larsen) up there, too.

“On the guys’ side, Ryan Hodge had to take a little bit of a break earlier this season, so I really think he’s going to make another bit of a move toward the front. Connor (Laktasic) and Ryan Day can continue to assert themselves toward the front of the pack and run like they belong there, and I think they will.”

Following the Texas A&M meet, Baylor will close the season in Lawrence, Kan., on Oct. 30 for the Big 12 Championships.

“We’re working on setting that all up,” Capron said. “Having that in the back of your mind, but also making sure that this is a step in the road and that we’re building toward that meet. We have our work cut out for us this weekend, so we can’t be thinking too much about two weeks from now.”
