ATLANTA – Baylor men’s basketball guards MaCio Teague and Jared Butler have been named to the 2021 Naismith Trophy Watch List, as announced Thursday by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

Baylor is the only Big 12 program with multiple players on the 50-member watch list for the national player of the year award. Teague and Butler are joined by Texas’ Greg Brown, Oklahoma State’s Cade Cunningham, Kansas’ Marcus Garrett and West Virginia’s Oscar Tsiebwe to give the conference six watch list members.

A midseason 30 team will be released in early February, followed by 10 national semifinalists and four finalists on March 4 and March 16, respectively. The 2021 Naismith Trophy will be awarded during the Final Four at the Naismith Awards Brunch on April 4.

Teague and Butler could play against 10 fellow watch list members during the Bears’ first five games of the season. Baylor opens the season Nov. 25 against No. 18 Arizona State (Remy Martin), then faces either Boston College or No. 3 Villanova (Collin Gillespie and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl) a day later. BU plays its third game of the season at Seton Hall (Sandro Mamukelashvili) on Nov. 29, then heads to Indianapolis to face No. 8 Illinois (Kofi Cockburn and Ayo Dosunmu) on Dec. 2 and No. 1 Gonzaga (Joel Ayayi, Corey Kispert, Jalen Suggs and Drew Timme) on Dec. 5.

In his first season playing for Baylor in 2019-20, Teague earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors and was unanimously named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team. He was recognized on the Myrtle Beach Invitational All-Tournament Team and the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team, and he was a two-time Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.

Teague led the Bears in scoring in six-consecutive games with at least 15 points in each before injuring his wrist at Texas on Feb. 10. He missed the next two games, then returned to start the final five games before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Baylor went 21-1 in games in which Teague recorded double-figure scoring.

Teague went through the NBA Draft process during the offseason before electing to return to Baylor for his 2020-21 senior season. As a junior, he averaged 13.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 steals in a team-leading 32.6 minutes per game. He led the team with an .848 free throw percentage and ranked second on the squad with 60 made 3-pointers in 28 games played, all starts. He’s on the 2021 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award watch list and was honorable mention Preseason All-Big 12.

A unanimous third-team All-American and first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2019-20, Butler also went through the NBA Draft process during the offseason before electing to return to Baylor for his 2020-21 junior season. As a sophomore, Butler led the Bears with 16.0 points per game, while shooting .381 from 3-point range and averaging 3.1 assists and 1.6 steals in 30.4 minutes per game.

The Reserve, La., native is the first player in program history named to the AP Preseason All-America Team. He’s also been tabbed as Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year, becoming the third player in program history to earn that honor. Butler was a unanimous choice to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team, and he’s on the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award watch list.

Head coach Scott Drew enters his 18th season at Baylor in 2020-21. He holds a 362-224 career record over 18 years as a Division I coach, including a 342-213 mark at BU. Drew’s teams have combined to post a 306-144 record over the last 13 seasons, including a 21-10 mark over 11 postseason appearances in that span.

Baylor Athletics expects to open the season with 25 percent capacity in the Ferrell Center, and renewed season ticket holders will have exclusive priority.
