IRVING, Texas – Baylor’s Ryan Grider has been named Big 12 Men’s Golfer of the Month, as announced Wednesday by the conference office.

Grider is the eighth player in program history to win the conference’s monthly award and the first since Cooper Dossey in February 2017. He joins Jeremy Alcorn, Ryan Baca, Joakim Mikkelsen, Kyle Jones, Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen, Matthew Perrine and Dossey on Baylor’s list of Big 12 Men’s Golfers of the Month. Those players have combined to win the award 13 times, with Alcorn, Baca, Mikkelsen and Jones claiming multiple monthly honors.

Baylor swept the Big 12 Golfer of the Month awards for October, with Elodie Chapelet claiming the honor on the women’s side. This is the second time the Bears have won both awards in the same month, with Perrine and Amy Lee sweeping the honors in October 2016.

Grider helped the Bears win the 2020 Big 12 Match Play Championship, claiming the title for the second time in the event’s three-year history. He went 4-1 in his individual matches, including a 3&2 win over WAGR No. 74 Eugenio Lopez-Chicarra to give the Bears’ the decisive third point in the championship match against Oklahoma State.

Grider also won 2-up against WAGR No. 209 Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira of TCU in the Bears’ opening match, notched a 1-up win over West Virginia’s Jackson Davenport to clinch Baylor’s spot in the title match and recorded a 4&3 win over Iowa State’s Ricky Costello.

In the Bears’ lone stroke-play event of the month, Grider finished in ninth place at the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational, recording his first top-10 individual finish since September 2018, prior to having surgery that forced him to miss the entire 2019 fall season.

With his top-10 finish at Maridoe, Grider climbed from No. 433 in the Oct. 21 WAGR rankings to a career-best No. 366 in the latest rankings released today.

Baylor has wrapped up its fall season after finishing fourth in a pair of stroke-play events and taking the Big 12 Match Play Championship title. The Bears return to action Jan. 25 with a one-day, 36-hole tournament in the Rice Intercollegiate at Houston’s Westwood Golf Club.
