WACO, Texas – Baylor athletics followed up a banner fall semester with a record-setting spring semester in the classroom as 14 of 17 sports had their best term GPA on record and many individual GPA personal bests were set as well.

After facing unprecedented changes from in-person to online classes in the middle of the spring term due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Baylor student-athletes persevered as an impressive 69 percent of all student-athletes earned personal best GPAs.

“With a record number reaching their personal best in the classroom, I couldn’t be prouder of the academic success that our student-athletes were able to achieve this spring,” said Deedee Brown-Campbell, Assistant Athletic Director, Student-Athlete Center for Excellence . “They continue to exemplify the determination and persistence that is needed to prepare them to be Champions for Life.”

Additionally, 415 student-athletes, 84 percent of BU’s student-athlete population, were crowned Academic Champions, an honor which includes graduates, student-athletes with a 3.5 GPA or better and those who earned a personal best in the semester. That mark betters the 282 honorees from last spring and is the best on record for the Bears.

Overall, Baylor student-athletes finished up the spring term with a 3.60 GPA, the best on record for a semester. The Bears have had a 3.10 term GPA or better for 19-straight semesters. In addition, BU student-athletes have earned a 3.20 term GPA in 12 of the last 13 semesters.

“The success that our student-athletes had in the classroom this semester was truly a remarkable feat,” said Chris Johnson, Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services. “Facing unprecedented obstacles and stressors of a global pandemic, our student-athletes utilized both traditional and non-traditional methods of communication and learning to achieve new heights.”

Johnson also believes that going through the obstacles faced this term will only help student-athletes with their future endeavors, as “Baylor student-athletes demonstrated an ability to pursue and prioritize academic success in the midst of adversity, which will without question lead them on their way to becoming Champions for Life.”

In the spring semester, 442 student-athletes, 89 percent of BU’s student-athlete population, earned a 3.0 GPA or higher, the most in a single semester in school history. In addition, 183 of those student-athletes were named to Baylor’s Dean’s List, the highest mark on record. Finally, 110 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester, more than doubling the total from last spring. That marks the most student-athletes to ever have a 4.0 in a semester in school history.

The current cumulative GPA for the Bears is a 3.34, the best on record and marks the 24th-straight semester of a term GPA of 3.0 or greater.

The 14 sports that earned record-setting team GPAs include baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, acrobatics and tumbling, women’s cross country, equestrian, football, men’s golf, soccer, softball, women’s tennis, men’s track and field, women’s track and field and volleyball.
