IOWA CITY, Iowa – Freshmen Kamden Jackson and Mariah Ayers both finished second among collegians in their respective 200-meter premier races to highlight day one for Baylor track & field at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on the campus of the University of Iowa.

“It was a good first day,” head coach Todd Harbour said. “A lot of good experience for the young ones. In the long jump, Caira (Pettway) did an outstanding job. Mikayla (Deshazer) – that was a good throw for her, a young freshman. She did an outstanding job. Will (Anderson) and Elijah (Gifford) had good 600s. Overall it was a good start.”

In the women’s 200 meters premier, Ayers clocked a time of 24.48 to finish fourth overall and second among collegiate runners.

Jackson led a strong 200 meters premier race for Baylor, as he finished second overall with a time of 21.33. Ryan Croson (21.75) took fifth, Isaiah Cunningham (21.76) placed sixth, and Hasani Barr (21.96) finished eighth. Jayson Baldridge also had a big day, winning the first 200 meters race with a time of 21.83.

“The 200s were really good,” Harbour added. “Two freshmen, Mariah and Kam, both ended up second. Those were probably the highlights.”

The day started off with two solid performances by Deshazer. The freshman from Kansas City, Mo., placed fourth in the women’s shot put with a mark of 46-7.25 (14.20m) and eighth in the women’s weight throw at 47-7 (14.50m).

Anderson took third in the men’s 600 meters with a time of 1:20.32, followed by Gifford in fifth at 1:21.29.

Pettway opened up the indoor season with a strong third-place finish in the women’s long jump, posting an indoor personal-best mark of 19-3.5 (5.88m).

The second and final day of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational kicks off Saturday at noon CT with the women’s pole vault. Live results can be found at https://results.wayzatatiming.com/meets/5097.

“We have a lot of big events tomorrow, so we’ll come back strong,” Harbour said.
