FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - KC Lightfoot won a duel of the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked pole vaulters in the NCAA in emphatic fashion, breaking his own school record yet again with a mark of 19-1 ½ (5.83m) at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center in Ames, Iowa.

“You kind of run out of superlatives for KC,” head coach Todd Harbour said. “He had another good day. He had to work a little bit earlier, but once he got rolling he started having a pretty good day up there. It was a great competition with Chris Nilsen there. I’m happy for KC. He’s just keeps on keeping on.”

Lightfoot, a sophomore from Lee’s Summit, Mo., regained the No. 1 spot in the NCAA that he had relinquished to South Dakota’s Nilsen, defeating Nilsen (18-6 ¾, 5.66m) at the Iowa State Classic with a school and facility-record mark.

At the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., Jalen Seals and Celia Holmes took home victories for the Bears.

“Celia’s mile was a big PB (personal best) for her,” Harbour said. “To win and PB, that was a big day. That was definitely one of the highlights of the day, watching her run that. It puts her in contention now in the Big 12.”

Holmes won the women’s mile with a personal-best time of 4:51.99, while Seals took the men’s long jump title with a mark of 24-8.25 (7.52m).

“Jalen had a great day and so did Alex (Madlock),” Harbour said. “Both long jumpers did a good job.”

Madlock made the final of the women’s long jump, recording a mark of 19-7 (5.97m) to finish in seventh place.

Kamden Jackson and Sydney Washington both earned spots in the finals of the 60 meters, with Jackson taking seventh in the men’s race (6.76) and Washington finishing sixth in the women’s race (7.45).

“For Sydney and Kam, I thought that was outstanding,” Harbour said. “Especially for Kam just being a freshman. Those were two outstanding finals in the 60, both the men and the women. To make the finals, that was really solid for both of them.”

In the men’s fastest 400 meters, Howard Fields III ran a season-best 46.57 to take fifth place. Matthew Moorer also had a season-best time (47.02) to finish in 10th place.

“It was really good to see Matthew continue to drop, getting back where he wants to be,’ Harbour said. “Trey (Howard Fields III) ran a good race. He got in some traffic but finished strong and dropped his time a little bit. I know he’s ready to go a little bit faster, but he’s continuing to move down. So that was good.”
