IRVING, Texas – Baylor sophomore guard Jared Butler has been named Big 12 Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, as voted on by a panel of media members and announced Monday by the conference office. Butler picked up his second Big 12 weekly honor after earning named the league’s Newcomer of the Week on Feb. 25 last season.

A Reserve, La., native, Butler earned Myrtle Beach Invitational MVP honors after leading the Bears to their third regular-season tournament title in the last four years. He helped guide the Bears to a road win at Coastal Carolina and neutral-site wins over No. 17 Villanova and Ohio.

Butler is Baylor’s first underclassmen guard to win a conference Player of the Week honor since David Wesley was recognized as Southwest Conference Player of the Week as a sophomore during the 1989-90 season.

Butler has led the Bears in scoring in five of six games this season. He leads the Big 12 with 116 points (19.3 ppg), 39 field goals made and 21 made 3-pointers. Butler also leads the league in 3-point percentage (.525) and free throw percentage (17-17, 1.000), and he’s fourth in steals per game (2.0), fifth in field goal percentage (.534), 13th in assists per game (3.5) and 14th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5).

In leading the Bears to a win over No. 17 Villanova in the Myrtle Beach Invitational title game, Butler posted a team-high 22 points along with three assists, two steals and one block. He checked back into the game with the Bears trailing 66-64 and 6:14 remaining, then hit 3-pointers on the next two offensive possessions to give the Bears a lead they would not relinquish in a back-and-forth battle featuring 18 lead changes.

Butler also posted 12 points and three assists in 21 minutes while battling foul trouble in a semifinal win at Coastal Carolina. He opened the tournament with a game-high 19 points, five assists and a career-high five steals in 34 minutes of a win over Ohio.

With Butler’s recognition, Baylor has now had at least one Big 12 Player of the Week honoree in each of the last nine seasons, including multiple honorees in each of the last eight years entering the 2019-20 season. All told, Baylor has had 32 Big 12 Player of the Week winners in the last 13 seasons after earning seven honors in the league’s first 11 seasons. Butler is the 23rd different Baylor player to earn Big 12 Player of the Week honors, and those players have combined to win the award 39 times in the league’s 24-year history.

Baylor returns home to host three consecutive games to start the month of December. The Bears host Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 3 before a pair of marquee non-conference games against Arizona on Dec. 7 and Butler on Dec. 10. The Bears climbed to No. 19 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll on Monday morning.
