Baylor Women’s Golf Tied for Eighth at NCAA East Lansing Regional
Bears are four shots back of top-six team cut to advance to nationals

THE RUNDOWN
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Baylor women’s golf shot 10-over-par 298 in Monday’s first round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional at Forest Akers West Golf Course. The Bears are tied for eighth place and four shots back of the top-six team cut to advance to the NCAA Championship.

No. 32 Baylor (+10) trails No. 12 Kent State (-6), No. 5 Arizona (+2), No. 28 Illinois (+4), Indiana (+5), No. 20 Michigan State (+5), No. 21 Campbell (+6) and No. 14 UCLA (+8). The Bears are tied with No. 4 Stanford (+10) and lead Xavier (+11), No. 45 Augusta (+14), LSU (+16), No. 41 Louisville (+17), No. 39 Georgia (+18), No. 33 North Carolina (+18), Long Beach State (+19), Harvard (+21) and IUPUI (+28).

Baylor is led by junior Erica Chiang, who shot even-par 72 in her career-first NCAA Tournament round to sit in a tie for 14th place in the 96-player field. Sophomore Gurleen Kaur is tied for 21st place at 1-over 73, while senior Maria Vesga is tied for 43rd place at 4-over 76. Sophomore Diane Baillieux carded Baylor’s final counting score at 5-over 77 to tie for 58th place, and freshman Emma Bradley is tied for 74th place at 7-over 79.

BU got off to a slow start with no birdies on the first four holes to six at 6-over, but BU played the next five holes at even-par to take the turn at 6-over. Baillieux and Vesga began the back-9 with birdies on No. 10, and Kaur made an eagle on the par-5 13th to go with birdies from Baillieux and Chiang on the same hole, moving the Bears to 2-over through 13 holes.

Baylor went without any birdies on the 14th through 16th holes, playing that three-hole stretch at 8-over, but BU got back on track with birdies from Baillieux, Vesga and Chiang on No. 17. Kaur and Chiang played the back-9 at even-par, while Vesga and Baillieux were 2-over.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   BU is tied for third in the 18-team field in par-3 scoring at 2-over 3.10, ranks fourth in par-5 scoring at 3-under 4.85 and is tied for 12th in par-4 scoring at 18-over 4.36.
  *   Baylor’s 11 birdies in the first round tied for eighth-most, while its 49 pars ranked 13th in the field.
  *   Kaur is tied for fourth in the 96-player field in par-3 scoring at 1-under 2.75, while Vesga and Chiang are tied for 15th at even-par 3.00.
  *   Chiang is tied for 17th in the field in par-4 scoring at 1-over 4.10.
  *   Kaur is tied for second in the tournament in par-5 scoring at 2-under 4.50, while Chiang and Baillieux are tied for 15th at 1-under 4.75.
  *   Kaur’s eagle on No. 13 was one of five eagles made during the first round.
  *   Baillieux’s four birdies tied for seventh-most in the field.

STAT OF THE DAY
4-under – Baylor’s four counting scores combined to shoot 4-under over a nine-hole stretch between the fifth and 13th holes. Kaur was 3-under in that stretch, while Chiang was 2-under, Baillieux was even and Vesga was 1-over.

WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor is paired with UCLA and Stanford for Tuesday’s second round, and they will be the first groups to tee off from No. 1. Bradley has the first tee time at 7:03 a.m. CT, and she’ll be followed by Baillieux at 7:14 a.m., Vesga at 7:25 a.m., Kaur at 7:36 a.m. and Chiang at 7:47 a.m. Pairings will be reset for Wednesday’s final round based on standings through 36 holes.
