THE RUNDOWN
OPELIKLA, Ala. – Baylor women’s golf is tied for ninth place after shooting 8-over-par 296 in Saturday’s first round of the Evans Derby Experience at Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika, Ala. Sophomore Gurleen Kaur shot 4-under 68 to tie for the individual lead with 36 holes remaining.



No. 39 Baylor (+8) is tied with No. 9 South Carolina (+8) and ahead of No. 18 Alabama (+13), No. 36 Louisville (+14), No. 32 Clemson (+17) and No. 41 Ole Miss (+17). The Bears trail No. 8 Arkansas (-3), No. 7 Florida (E), No. 2 Texas (+2), No. 13 Auburn (+2), No. 14 Kent State (+4), No. 11 Florida State (+5), No. 3 Duke (+5) and No. 45 Mississippi State (+6). All 14 teams in the field are ranked among the nation’s top-45 teams in the Golfstat rankings.



Kaur (-4) is tied with Florida’s Clara Manzalini (-4) atop the leaderboard in the 87-player field. She began on the 10th tee and made the turn at 3-under after a birdie on No. 13 and an eagle on No. 15. Kaur made birdie on her 10th and 14th holes around a bogey on her 12th hole, and she finished with four consecutive pars to post the 4-under 68.



Maria Vesga was 3-over across her first three holes, but she posted 13 pars and two birdies the rest of the way to card 1-over 73, which has her tied for 21st place. Erica Chiang shot 4-over 76 to tie for 50th place, and Diane Baillieux recorded Baylor’s final counting score at 7-over 79 to tie for 67th place. Emma Bradley is tie for 73rd place at 8-over 80, and Amelia McKee, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 42nd place at 3-over 75. McKee made three consecutive birdies on her sixth, seventh and eighth holes of the day to move to 2-under through eight holes.


HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor is tied for third in the 14-team field in par-5 scoring at 2-over 3.10, seventh in par-5 scoring at 1-under 4.95 and 11th in par-4 scoring at 15-over 4.30.
  *   Kaur made the only eagle of the day out of 87 rounds played.
  *   Baylor’s 62 pars are tied for second-most in the field.
  *   Vesga is tied for the tournament lead in par-4 scoring at 1-under 3.90, while Kaur is tied for sixth at even-par 4.00.
  *   Kaur is tied for the tournament lead in par-5 scoring at 3-under 4.25 and tied for third in the field in par-3 scoring at 1-under 2.75.
  *   Baillieux is tied for third in the field with a 1-under, 2.75 par-3 scoring average.
  *   McKee is tied for 15th in par-5 scoring at 1-under 4.75 and tied for 14th in par-5 scoring at even-par 3.00.
  *   Vesga, Kaur, Baillieux and Chiang are all tied for 14th in the field with 13 pars.

STAT OF THE DAY
1 – Kaur made the tournament’s only eagle in the first round. She needed three strokes on the 491-yard, par-5 15th hole. Kaur’s eagle was her first of the season and the third by a BU player this year.


WHAT'S NEXT
Sunday’s second round is scheduled for tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT. Baylor players will start on the 10th tee in pairings with golfers from Alabama and Louisville, with Bradley up first at 8:30 a.m. She’ll be followed in 10-minute intervals by Baillieux, Chiang, Vesga and Kaur, respectively.
