Dickey places ‘Focus on the fundamentals’ in strategic restructuring of external operations

WACO, Texas – Baylor Vice President and Director of Athletics Mack B. Rhoades, IV, announced Friday, the completion of a comprehensive assessment and realignment process for its external affairs unit in advance of the 2019-20 academic year.

This roughly six-month process, led by Assistant Vice President of Athletics, Jeramiah Dickey, was intended to simplify external efforts and identify the necessary elements required to operate at an elite level across external teams.

“Our goal was to focus on the fundamentals and streamline operations in a way that would allow for strategic, data-based decision making, while recognizing existing talent within the department,” said Dickey. “With an emphasis on data tracking and analysis, we’re now positioned to reenergize our marketing efforts – which will bring greater strategy and synergy to all other areas of external.”

In alignment with these efforts, Jovan Overshown has been promoted to the position of Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs. Overshown will oversee all aspects of the department's external operations, which include, Resource Development, Strategic Marketing and Fan Engagement, Branding and Creative Services, Athletic Communications and BaylorVision.

“Jovan has been an incredible asset for Baylor Athletics since the day she joined our team,” Dickey said. “Her vision, commitment and care for the university, our coaches, staff and student-athletes is evident in all she does. Her unique blend of creative and strategic thinking and leadership abilities make her uniquely positioned to lead our external teams in this exciting new direction.”

Overshown has served as Baylor Athletics’ Senior Associate Athletics Director for Branding and Engagement since November 2018. Previously she held the position of Associate Athletics Director for Engagement.

“I’m incredibly encouraged and enthusiastic about this departmental approach,” said Overshown. “Success comes with strategic focus and intentionality, and with this structure, we’re positioned to do just that.”

Under the direction of Overshown, the external leadership team will consist of Chris Humphreys, David Kaye and Justin Hoff, and newly promoted Courtney Scrivano, Cody Gougler and Nick Florence.

Courtney Scrivano has been promoted to Associate Athletics Director for Marketing and Fan Engagement.  Joining Baylor Athletics in 2015, Scrivano previously served as Assistant Athletics Director for Resource Development Communications and Director of Strategic Messaging. Scrivano will lead the teams responsible for strategic marketing campaigns, fan experience and data research and analytics.

Cody Gougler has been promoted to Associate Athletics Director for Resource Development. Since 2017, Gougler has served as Assistant Athletics Director for Resource Development. In this expanded role, he will oversee the department annual fund, the Baylor Bear Foundation, ticket sales and ticket operations.

As a part of Gougler’s core resource development team, Alexis Keane has been elevated to Assistant Athletics Director for the Baylor Bear Foundation. Keane will manage the day-to-day operations of the Bear Foundation, the primary fundraising organization for Baylor Athletics, where she previously served as Director of Donor Relations.

Nick Florence has been promoted to Associate Athletics Director for Major Gifts. Florence will spearhead athletics capital projects and major gifts in partnership with University Development and a team of athletics gift officers. Florence joined the department in 2014, following a successful Baylor football career. He previously served as Director of Athletic Development.
