PROJECTED PITCHING MATCHUP

Tuesday, April 2 • 6:30 p.m. CT • RHP Jacob Ashkinos (0-1, 2.35 ERA) vs. RHP Jimmy Fouse (2-0, 1.42 ERA)

AGAINST DBU

• Under the direction of Steve Rodriguez, the Bears are 6-1 against the Patriots. Earlier this season, on Feb. 26, the Bears defeated the Patriots 10-4 at Baylor Ballpark. The lone loss to the Patriots under Coach Rodriguez came on March 25, 2016 in Dallas, as they Bears dropped the front end of a two-game midweek series, 5-3. The Bears bounced back to win game two, 19-6. Last year at DBU, Tuesday’s projected starter, Jacob Ashkinos, threw 4.0 innings in relief in a scheduled staff day, holding the Patriots to just one hit and striking out a career-best nine batters while walking just two.

TOPS IN THE CONFERENCE

• The Bears have started Big 12 play 5-1 and sit atop the conference standings with Oklahoma State. The 5-1 start is the best start to conference play under Coach Rodriguez and the best over the first two weekends of the season since starting 6-0 in 2012.

• The Bears won their series at Kansas by winning games one and two in doubleheader fashion on Saturday, March 30 vs. the Jayhawks. The conference doubleheader victory is the first time in program history since the Bears did so on March 3, 2010 at Missouri. The Bears were led by Nick Loftin who was 8-for-15 in the series against the Jayhawks. On the pitching side, the Bears got two quality starts on Saturday, as Paul Dickens through 6.0 innings, allowing just two runs while striking out a career-best 12 batters. Then in game two of the doubleheader, Jimmy Winston pitched a career-best 7.0 shutout innings, striking out a career-high five batters.

The Bears’ on-base percentage of .409 is 11th-best in the nation, while the can do a lot of different things with the bat as the team’s slugging percentage (.502) ranks sixth. The Bears’ fielding percentage of 0.979 ranks 20th nationally. The team also ranks fourth with just 6.54 hits allowed per nine innings and the team ERA of 3.25 is 28th best.
