THE RUNDOWN
NORMAN, Okla. – Baylor women’s golf shot 6-under-par 278 in Friday’s first round of the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club, good for third place and six shots back of the lead with two rounds remaining.



Baylor (-6) trails only Alabama (-12) and Texas (-12). The Bears lead Florida State (-2), Clemson (+2), Texas A&M (+2), Oregon (+3), Wisconsin (+3), Oklahoma (+5), Mississippi State (+6), Notre Dame (+7), Miami (+7), UNC Wilmington (+8), New Mexico (+19) and Texas State (+22).



BU began from the 10th tee and got off to a strong start at 5-under midway through the round. The Bears’ four counting scores were a combined even-par through the first five holes, but those players combined for eight birdies over the next four holes to take the turn at 5-under. BU made only four birdies during the second half of the round, but the Bears consistently made pars and had just three bogeys coming in to finish the day 6-under.



Maria Vesga leads the Bears with a 3-under-par 68, which has her tied for eighth place individually and two shots back of the lead in the 81-player field. Vesga was 1-over through her first five holes, then made three consecutive birdies on Nos. 15-17 and sank another birdie on No. 2 along with pars the rest of the way.



Laila Hrindova sits tied for 10th place after recording a 2-under 69 in her first round. Hrindova had only one blemish with a double bogey on No. 17, and she made four birdies and 13 pars. Gurleen Kaur is tied for 16th place at 1-under 70 following a round with 13 pars, three birdies and two bogeys, and Diane Bailllieux is tied for 22nd place at even-par 71.



Fiona Liddell shot 4-over 75 to tie for 58th place, and Jordan Shackelford, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 48th place with a 3-over 74.


HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor is tied for second in the 15-team field in par-3 scoring at 1-over 3.04, third in par-5 scoring at 3-under 4.85 and fifth in par-4 scoring at even-par 4.00.
  *   BU made 63 pars, good for third-most in the field, and the Bears ranked fifth with 15 birdies.
  *   Diane Baillieux, Laila Hrindova and Jordan Shackelford are tied for third in the 81-player field in par-3 scoring at 1-under 2.80.
  *   Maria Vesga is tied for fourth in par-4 scoring at 3-under 3.67.
  *   Gurleen Kaur is tied for third in par-5 scoring at 2-under 4.50, while Hrindova and Baillieux are tied for 11th at 1-under 4.75.
  *   Vesga and Hrindova are tied for 11th in the field with four birdies apiece.
  *   Vesga, Kaur and Hrindova and tied for 15th in the tournament with 13 pars each.


STAT OF THE DAY
1-under – Baylor’s six players combined to play the toughest hole of the day at 1-under-par. The 169-yard, par-3 8th hole played at +0.36 to par, but Shackelford birdied the hole and all five members of the Baylor lineup made pars.



WHAT'S NEXT

Baylor is in the final group to tee off for Saturday’s second round in pairings with Texas and Alabama. Liddell is up first at 10:40 a.m. CT, and she’ll be followed by Baillieux at 10:50 a.m., Kaur at 11 a.m., Hrindova at 11:10 a.m. and Vesga at 11:20 a.m. Shackelford tees off with other individuals from the 10th tee at 10:10 a.m. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
