THE RUNDOWN
OLYMPIA FIELDS, ILL. – Baylor men’s golf is in 11th place after shooting 12-over-par 292 in Friday’s first round of the Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club.

BU (+12) leads Florida State (+13), Purdue (+15) and Air Force (+28) and is nine shots back of third place with 36 holes remaining. The Bears trail California (-7), Oklahoma State (-7), South Carolina (+3), UNLV (+3), Alabama (+4), Illinois (+5), Texas A&M (+6), USC (+7) Indiana (+8) and Stanford (+10).

Baylor took the turn at even-par, but the Bears played the final five holes at a combined 14-over. The BU lineup posted eight birdies and eight bogeys or worse on the front-9, but the Bears made only four birdies and recorded 18 bogeys or worse after the turn.

Redshirt sophomore Travis McInroe, who is playing as an individual, carded the best score by a Baylor player with a 1-under 69 to sit in a tie for 11th place. McInroe was 3-under through 11 holes before bogeys on Nos. 16 and 18 dropped him to 1-under.

Sophomore Ryan Grider carded an even-par 70 and is tied for 13th place. He was 1-under through 13 and bounced back from a bogey on No. 14 with a birdie on the next hole to get back to 1-under, but a bogey on No. 18 dropped him to even-par.

Junior Colin Kober posted a 3-over 73 to tie for 31st place, while senior Braden Bailey carded 4-over 74 to tie for 49th and sophomore Cooper Dossey made four birdies on the front-9 and took the turn at 3-under before finishing with a 5-over 75 in a tie for 58th place. Senior Garrett May was 2-over through 15 holes, but he played the final three at 4-over to finish with a 6-over 76 in a tie for 64th place.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor tied the third-best par-3 scoring average at 2-over 3.10, tied for ninth in par-4 scoring at 11-over 4.18 and finished the day 14th in par-5 scoring at 5-over 5.50.
  *   The BU lineup combined to tie for ninth in the field with 52 pars and tie for eighth with 12 birdies.
  *   Travis McInroe is tied for second in the 75-player field in par-4 scoring at 2-under 3.83.
  *   Cooper Dossey and Ryan Grider are tied for third in par-3 scoring at 1-under 2.75.
  *   Grider is tied for seventh in par-5 scoring at 1-under 4.50.
  *   Braden Bailey and Colin Kober are tied for 19th in par-4 scoring at 1-over 4.08.
  *   Bailey is tied for 11th in par-3 scoring at even-par 3.00.
  *   Grider’s 14 pars are tied for fourth-most in the field.
  *   Dossey and McInroe are tied for sixth in the field with four birdies apiece.

STAT OF THE DAY
1 – BU players combined to make one birdie over the final six holes after sinking a combined 15 birdies over the first 12 holes. Dossey and McInroe had four birdies apiece, Bailey added three birdies, Grider and Kober had two birdies apiece and May made one birdie.

WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor is paired with Stanford and Florida State for Saturday’s second round, which begins at 8 a.m. CT. BU players will tee off from No. 10, with May up first at 8:30 a.m. He’ll be followed in nine-minute intervals by Dossey, Bailey, Kober and Grider, respectively.
