THE RUNDOWN
HANAHAN, S.C. – Baylor women’s golf recovered from a slow start to shoot 3-over-par 291 in Sunday’s first round of the 2018 Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall. The Bears are currently tied for ninth place and just six shots back of the top four.



BU was one of only seven squads in the 19-team field to complete the first round before weather forced players off the course. Teams will resume their first rounds at 7 a.m. CT Monday, and the second round is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m.



Baylor’s four counting scores were a combined 8-over through 14 holes, but Gurleen Kaur and Maria Vesga both finished with two birdies and two pars, while Diane Baillieux shot 1-under over the final three holes and Fiona Liddell carded even-par from Nos. 15-18. The late charge helped the Bears climb into a tie for ninth place and the third-best score of seven teams to complete the first round.



Florida (-10) and Arkansas (-6) were the only teams to finish their rounds with better scores than the Bears. Central Florida (+4), Indiana (+13), Maryland (+14) and Charleston Southern (+30) also completed all 18 holes. BU trails six more teams who will complete the first rounds on Monday, including Vanderbilt (-8), Penn State (-3), Furman (-3), College of Charleston (-3), Wake Forest (E) and Boston College (+1). BU is tied with Florida State and North Carolina State.



Vesga carded the Bears’ best round with a 1-under 71 to sit in a tie for 15th place. Kaur shot even-par 72 and is currently tied for 27th place, while Liddell shot 1-over 73 to tie for 41st place. Baillieux posted the Bears’ final counting score with a 3-over 75 to tie for 65th place, and sophomore Jordan Shackelford shot 5-over 77 while making her career-first appearance in the Baylor lineup.


HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor is tied for third in par-3 scoring at even-par 3.00, eighth in par-5 scoring at 4-under 4.80 and tied for 14th in par-4 scoring at 12-over 4.24.
  *   Baylor’s four counting scores were just 3-over at the turn, but a tough three-hole stretch to start the back-9 moved the Bears to 8-over.
  *   BU players combined to make one birdie over the first five holes on the back-9, then finished with seven birdies and an eagle over the final four holes.
  *   Baylor’s 58 pars are third-most in the field, and the Bears rank eighth with 12 birdies.
  *   Fiona Liddell is second in the 102-player field in par-3 scoring at 2-under 2.50, while Gurleen Kaur is tied for third at 1-under 2.75.
  *   Diane Baillieux is tied for 11th in par-5 scoring at 2-under 4.50.
  *   Maria Vesga and Liddell are tied for fifth in the field with 13 pars.


STAT OF THE DAY
5-under – Baylor combined to shoot 5-under over its final four holes, which launched the Bears up the leaderboard into a tie for ninth place at 3-over 291.



WHAT'S NEXT

First round play resumes at 7 a.m. CT Monday, and the second round is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Baylor is again paired with Florida and Arkansas for Monday’s second round, and those teams will start on the back-9. Shackelford tees off first for Baylor at 9:12 a.m., and she’ll be followed in nine-minute intervals by Baillieux, Liddell, Kaur and Vesga, respectively. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
