WACO, Texas -- No. 13 Utah used a trio of long touchdown runs and a pick-6 to post a 55-28 win over Baylor football, on Saturday night at McLane Stadium.
Baylor (5-5, 3-4 Big 12 Conference) saw Utah (8-2, 5-2 Big 12) jump out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and were able to use three long TD runs, of 65, 67 and 74 yards, to pace a potent rushing attack and lead the Utes to the win.
The Utes rolled to 380 yards of rushing offense, keeping the Bears on their heels. The Bears pulled within one score in the opening stages of the second half but a 74-yard TD scamper on a QB keeper pushed BU at arm’s length, with the Utes finishing off three fourth-quarter TDs to put the game out of reach.
BU had 563 yards of total offense, including 133 rushing.
Baylor saw QB Sawyer Robertson throw for 430 yards on 29-of-58 passing with three TDs and two interceptions. It marked his third career 400+ yard game and the 10th 300+ yard game of his career.
A pair of Bears had over 100-yard receiving, including Josh Cameron and Ashtyn Hawkins. Cameron had the best game of his career with new highs in catches (13) and yards (165), while catching two TDs. Hawkins added seven catches for 119 yards. Kole Wilson had a TD grab and caught four balls for 87 yards. TE Michael Trigg had three catches for 42 yards.
Sophomore tailback Bryson Washington had 14 totes for 97 yards. Freshman Caden Knighten had eight carries for 22 yards.
Defensively, Devyn Bobby had 11 tackles and a TFL. Keaton Thomas had eight tackles, two TFLs and one QB hurry. Emar’rion Winston had a pair of sacks.
Utah saw Byrd Ficklin come off the bench and rush six times for 166 yards with two of the long TD totes. Wayshawn Parker had 15 carries for 129 yards and a score and NaQuari Rogers had six carries for 27 yards and two TDs.
Baylor returns to action at Arizona on Saturday, with kickoff TBD.
The teams traded defensive stops opening the game, before Utah struck first on a 10-play, 76-yard drive that ended in a 25-yard pass from Devon Dampier to Dallen Bentley to put the Utes up 7-0 with 2:31 left in the first.
That lead grew after Robertson was picked off by Elijah Davis, who jumped a slant route, and rumbled 65 yards for a score and a 14-0 lead with 11 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Bears got on the board with a fourth-down conversion from the one-yard line, with Robertson finding Cameron for the score to cut the lead to 14-7.
Backup Utah QB Byrd Ficklin took a keeper 67 yards on the ensuing drive to up the score to 21-7.
Connor Hawkins completed a 73-yard drive with a 23-yard field goal with 5:01 left in the half.
Wayshawn Parker pushed the lead to 28-10 with a 64-yard TD rush with 4:28 left in the second quarter but the Bears answered with an 18-second drive that accounted for 55 yards, with Cameron taking a Robertson hurl 29 yards into the endzone for the score with four seconds left.
The Bears accounted for 362 yards of total offense in the first half, with 244 coming on the arm of Robertson. UU had 243 yards in the first half, including 64 passing and 179 rushing.
Baylor forced a stop on the first UU possession of the second stanza and marched down the field to cut the lead to one score with a 31-yard field goal from Hawkins.
Utah answered with a 74-yard run from Ficklin on a QB keeper, taking the lead to 35-20 with 7:14 left in the third quarter.
After the Bears were thwarted on fourth down at midfield, Utah put the game out of reach with a three-yard rush from Rogers with 14:12 left and added a five-yard TD grab from Parker with 11:03 left.
Baylor cut the lead to 49-28 with a Wilson TD grab to complete a 75-yard drive but Utah went on a nearly five-minute drive that ended in a Rogers TD rush for the final margin, 55-28.
