WACO, Texas -- Baylor football continues a four-game homestand to open the 2023 season, playing host to No. 14/14 Utah on Saturday at McLane Stadium, with kickoff slated for 11 a.m. and a broadcast live on ESPN and the Baylor Sports Network.



Bob Wischusen (play-by-play), Robert Griffin III (analyst) and Kris Budden (sideline) will be on the call for ESPN. The Voice of the Bears, John Morris (play-by-play), JJ Joe (analyst) and Ricky Thompson (sideline) will voice the game for the Baylor Sports Network.



Baylor (0-1) and Utah (1-0) will square off in one of two remaining non-conference games for the Bears. Utah posted a 24-11 win over Florida last week, while the Bears fell in their season lid-lifter on Saturday at McLane Stadium.



SCOUTING THE UTES

• The two-time defending Pac 12 Champion Utah Utes are coming off a solid win over Florida on opening week, 24-11. The Utes built a dominating 24-3 lead midway through the third quarter, using an overpowering run defense that held the Gators to just 13 yards on 21 attempts. Florida passed for 333 yards on 31 of 44 through the air and Utah’s offense totaled 270 yards int he win, with 105 on the ground and 165 in the air.

• Cole Bishop had 11 tackles, one sack and forced a fumble to lead the Utah defense, while Jonah Ellis had two sacks and a pass break-up. Utah was without star QB Cam Rising, with Bryson Barnes completing 12 of 18 passes for 159 yards and a score, adding a rushing TD, in his stead, including a 70-yard strike to Money Parks. Mikey Matthews had four grabs for 34 yards and Micah Bernard and Nate Johnson each rushed for 45 yards. Jack Bouwmeester was a weapon at punter, booming six punts for a 51.8 yard average, including a 64 yarder, with three downed inside the 20-yard line. Cole Becker booted a 51-yard field goal in the second quarter.

• Utah is led by the all-time winningest coach in Utes history, Kyle Whittingham, who is in his 19th year at the helm with a 155-74 record, including an 11-5 mark in bowl games. He previously spent 11 years as an assistant coach and has led Utah to a winning record in 16 of his previous 18 years, including nine straight seasons. He is a graduate of BYU and owns two degrees from the school as a native of Provo. Whittingham has four children, including a pair of sons who played for him.

• Morgan Scalley is the defensive coordinator and safeties coach, Andy Ludwig coordinates the offense and coaches QBs and Jim Harding is the assistant head coach and offensive line coach. Scalley is in his 18th year as a coach at Utah and his eighth as the DC. He is a former All-America safety who was a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2019 when Utah ranked second in the nation in total defense. He leads a defense with the moniker RSNB - Relentless, Smart, Nasty, Ballhawks. Ludwig is in his fifth year of a second stint at Utah, where he was also the OC for the undefeated 2008 season (also from 2005-08), also spending time at Cal (2009-10), SDSU (2011-12), Wisconsin (2013-14) and Vanderbilt (2015-18). Harding is in his 10th season as the offensive line coach and has been the assistant head coach since 2017.



CONNECTING THE TEAMS

• Baylor Coach Dave Aranda served on the Wisconsin staff with then UW offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig, the current OC for Utah. The two were on the same staff in 2013 and 2014, with each serving as the coordinators of their respective sides of the ball.

• Offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes spent the 2018-20 seasons as the OC at BYU, and BU offensive line coach Eric Mateos as the o-line coach at BYU from 2019-20. Grimes’ son, and BU long snapper Garrison Grimes is from American Fork, Utah, and is one of two Bears from Utah, including offensive lineman George Maile, a native of South Jordan, Utah.
